Christened Paul Thomas DeLage Sumter and called DeLage, he was the son of diplomat Thomas Sumter, Jr. (1768-1840) and the grandson of Revolutionary War General and US Senator Thomas Sumter (1734-1832). DeLage Sumter graduated from West Point in 1835 and was commissioned as a First Lieutenant. He saw action in Florida during the Seminole Wars and attained the rank of Colonel before leaving the Army.
