Rodgers -William Frank Rodgers -Arey Rodgers Married ~ Mary Euelina Hasty ~ 16 August 1877-Chesterfield County, SC. 1 Child:.................................................. ------------------------------------------- *Giles Monroe Rodgers Thomas Didymus Rodgers was the eleventh child of fourteen born to Job Rodgers Sr. and Nancy Miars Brumbelow in Anson County, NC. He first married Sarah Ann Morton about 1848 in Stanly County, NC. So the story goes, about the time Thomas Didymus Rodgers was to leave for service in Comany A 27th NC Infantry CSA he provided for a girl age 20 named Mary Hasty to help his wife out in his absence. Just so happened that Mary Hasty gave birth to a child Giles Monroe Rodgers on December 11, 1863. In 1874 Thomas and Sarah separated and Thomas took four of their children to Chesterfield County. On August 16, 1877 Thomas married Mary Euelina Hasty in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He lived there until his death in 1897. Thomas Didymus Rodgers was buried at Antioc Church in Chesterfield County. Over the years the church disbanded and in 2004 Rodgers Family members arranged to have his remains removed to Zion United Methodist Church in Pageland where many of the family are at rest. --------------------------------------- Heritage -RODGERS- Anson-Union-Stanly Counties From Rhode Island to North Carolina 1635-1989 by W. Ray Rogers The story of Rodgers of Western Stanly County began about 1850 when 21 year old Thomas Didymus Rodgers came from Union County and married 19 year old Sara Ann Morton of the Bloomington Community. Sara was the daughter of Joseph Morton and Margaret "Peggy" Hatley, and the Granddaughter of Rev. Ezekial Morton, a well known Primative Baptist Minister and his wife Elizabeth Brumbelow. There is historical evidence that Elizabeth was a Cherokee Indian. In 1851 Thomas Didymus Rodgers purchased 100 acres of land on Mt. Spring Branch in Union County, NC from his brother Mosley for $325 and a smaller tract on Weeker's Branch for $40 In 1853 the Rodger's first child, Newton Alexander Rodgers, was born. He later married Nancy Pope of Union County, NC in 1875. Their second child, John Rodgers, was also born in 1853. He married Margaret Burris of Stanly County in 1879. In 1855 their first daughter, Mary Angeliia Rodgers, was born. She married W. C. Furr of Stanly County in 1883. In 1859 George Washington Rodgers was born. He later married Miraldi Jane Burris of Stanly County in 1879. In 1861 Sain Rodgers was born. He married Elizabeth Treece of Stanly County in 1883. Sain was only 17 1/2 at the time and his mother Sara signed the papers for his marriage. In 1863 at the age of 37 Thomas D. Rodgers was drafted into military service in the Confererate Army and was mustered in at Raliegh headquarters. He was assigned to Co. A-N.C. 27th Infantry Battalion. Official records from the National Archives show that he was captured along with his Battalion at Hatchers Run near Petersbug, Va. on April 02, 1865, a few weeks before the surender of the Army of Northern Virginia. After capture, they were transported to Point Lookout, Maryland. The battalion was held prisoner until June 17, 1865 when they took the Oath of Allegiance. In 1866 the second daughter of Thomas D. and Sara Rodgers was born. Her name was Sara. She never married, living with her sister Mary in Stanly County in later years. She died in 1902. In 1868 Thomas Rodgers was born. He married Naomi Burleson of Stanly County in 1891. He died in 1911 and is buried at Canton Baptist Church. In 1870 William F. Rodgers was born. He was married and lived his later years in Stanly County. His wife's name is not known. He died in 1918 and is buried at Canton Baptist Church. Son Arey Rodgers was born in 1872. He and his wife Mary lived later years in Montgomery County, NC. He died in 1941 and is buried in Troy, NC. Courthouse records in Union County show that between 1865 and 1870 Thomas D. Rodgers purchased several other tracts of land in Union County from his cousin Russell Rogers. During this time his marriage to Sara began to falter. There have been numerous accounts of the breakup, but the one we believe to be valid came from the granddaughter of Sara. She was a young girl at the time of the death of her grandmother, Sara Morton Rogers, and was very close to her. We will not attempt to explain these events. In early 1874 Joseph Morton visited the Union County home of his daughter Sara and her husband Thomas. At the end of his visit Sara returned to Stanly County with her father on the pretext of a short visit. She never returned. While she was away, Thomas transferred the deed on 4 plantations to his oldest son, Newton, who had just become 21. He also traded one plantation for another plantation in Chesterfield County, SC. At the time of the family split up John, 19, Mary A. 17, George, 15, and Sain, 13, all left Union County and came to Stanly County to visit their grandfather Morton's farm in the Bloomington Community. Thomas took the other 4 children ( Sara,14, Thomas,12, William,9, Arey,7) to Chesterfield County, SC. and they were living there with him in 1880 when the census was taken. The oldest was 14 and the youngest was 7 years of age. All four of these children eventually made their way to Stanly County and lived with relatives until they were able to make it on their own. William F. Rodgers was 27 when his father Thomas died in 1897 and received a share of the plantation in the will that was written in 1894. William F. Rodgers left Chesterfield County after the death of his father and lived in Albemarel for a number of years. He died in 1918. His brother John Rodgers became a merchant in Albemarle. George Rodgers became a carpenter and merchant in Albemarle. He was also the official cotton weigher of Stanly County. Mary Angelia Rodgers married W.C. Furr and lived in Albemarle. Her sister Sara Rodgers was living with her at the time of her death in 1902. Sain Rodgers lived a few years in Stanly County and is believed to have died about 1890 in Montgomery County. Arey Rodgers, the youngest, came over to Stanly County to live with his Grandparents. He eventually married and located in Montgomery County with wife Mary. She deid in 1925, but he continued to reside there until his death in 1941. He was buried in Troy, NC. The eldest son of Thomas and Sara Rodgers, Newton Alexander Rodgers, remained in Union County and raised a large family with his wife, Nancy Pope Rodgers. Many of their descendants reside in Union County today. Newton and some of his descendants are buried at Philadelphia Baptist Church in Union County. Sara Morton Rodgers and the children, John, George, William F., Thomas, Mary Angelia, and Sara are all buried at Canton Baptist Church, Stanly County. Thomas D. Rodgers was buried at the old Antioc Methodist Church in Chesrterfield County, SC. The church is no longer in existence having discontinued as an actual church many years ago.
