Cooke, whom friends and relatives called Ed, served as Boone County's sheriff, its clerk and one of its commissioners during his career. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Cooke; and his parents, Theodore and Macy Cooke. He is survived by his son, Joe Cooke of Van; daughter, Sherry Cooke of Van; daughter and son-in-law, Shelly and Kerry Dickens of Van; and granddaughter, Nina Mullins of Van. He also is survived by eight siblings, six brothers and two sisters. They are Hulin Cooke of Cottageville, Delano Cooke of St. Albans, Darrell Cooke of South Carolina, Bobby Cooke of California, Lester Cooke of Illinois, Clarence Cooke of Twilight, Elanor Knudson of Missouri and Travella Cooke of New Martinsburg. His family buried him Tuesday at Memory Gardens. "He was the best father you could ask for," Joe Cooke said. "He led by example. He loved his family, and he believed in honesty and integrity. "He was the kind of guy who told you not to borrow anything from anyone. If you wanted something, but you didn't have the funds to get it, then you needed to wait until you had the funds to get it. "Conversely, if someone else needed something, he would let them have it or help them get it." Cooke, whose nickname was "Mister Democrat," is known best for his political success in Boone County. Cooke served on the county court, which later became the county commission, from Jan. 1, 1967 until Dec. 31, 1968. Next, voters elected him sheriff, a position he held from Jan. 1, 1969 until Dec. 31, 1972. Then, he earned two stints on the county commission, the first from Nov. 17, 1976 until July 13, 1984 and the second from Jan. 1, 1985 until Aug. 10, 1987. Finally, officials appointed him county clerk, a title he held from Aug. 10, 1987 until Dec. 31, 1998, the day he retired. "He loved Boone County," Joe Cooke said. "He wanted to make sure Boone County got its fair share of the cut. You can only do so much in politics, but he wanted to do his best to help Boone County improve. "And he did it for everyone, not just the people who voted for him. His attitude was, 'If you voted for me, I'm going to do a good job for you. If you didn't vote for me, I'm still going to do a good job for you.' He was a democrat, but that didn't stop him from helping everybody." Cooke also was a World War II veteran and VFW Post 5578 member. "His military service is what ended up killing him," Joe Cooke said. "His legs were frozen during the war. A lot of his buddies had to have their feet and legs amputated for the same reason. But doctors told him he would be OK until he got older, then he would have problems, which is what happened. He had circulation problems. First, he had to have one of his legs amputated. Then, he had to have the other one amputated." Like many Boone County residents, Cooke enjoyed hunting and fishing. "He loved the outdoors," Kerry Dickens said. Another one of his passions was automobiles. He owned the Bandytown Esso and City Exxon stations. "He was a heck of a mechanic," Kerry Dickens said. "I worked in the county garage for seven years, and any time I had a problem, I would call him and he would know exactly what to do."
