The funeral was held from St. Patrick's church last Sunday morning, at 11:30, interment in Calvary cemetery. Thomas Francis Birmingham was born at Galena, Illinois, on September 15, 1856. He attended the public schools at Galena and after graduation therefrom taught school in several places in that vicinity. He spent some time in Wyoming before coming to this county. He came here in April, 1884, in company with the late Ed. F. Gallagher. After their arrival here they organized the Galena Lumber company, of which corporation Mr. Birmingham was manager until they disposed of it to Clyde King in November, 1911. A couple of years after establishing the lumber company Mr. Gallagher and Mr. Birmingham, associated with relatives in Illinois, purchased the First National Bank, which the two families have controlled since that time. For twenty seven years Mr. Birmingham managed the Galena Lumber Company and after their purchase of the bank was an officer in that institution up to the time of his death. Three years after his arrival here Mr. Birmingham returned to Darlington, Wis., where on Feb. 10, 1887, he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret J. Gallagher and they came back to O'Neill where Mr. Birmingham resided continuously up to the time of his death. To this union one son was born, Hugh J. Birmingham, of the First National Bank, who is left to mourn the passing of a kind and indulgent father. Mrs. Birmingham passed away in October 1925. Mr. Birmingham had always enjoyed splendid health up to the time he was seized with his last illness. He attended the last democratic national convention and after its adjournment he visited old friends in his boyhood home at Galena and Darlington, Wis., and after his return said that he thoroughly enjoyed the convention and the visit with old friends in Illinois and Wisconsin thereafter. About three weeks ago he was taken ill, but his condition was not considered serious for the first week. But his ailment did not respond to treatment and he kept gradually sinking until he quietly passed away last Friday afternoon. Mr. Birmingham was a shrewd and careful business man and by his thrift, industry and business acumen built up probably the largest fortune in this county, being rated at the time of his death as one of the wealthiest men in this part of the state. After the panic of the nineties, when Atkinson was left without a bank, the owners of the First National Bank started a bank there, which has been very successful. Later on they started a bank at Emmet, which is still a very prosperous little bank. At the time of his death he was vice president of the First National of this city, vice president of the First National at Atkinson and president of the Emmett State Bank. At the time of his death he was also a member of the O'Neill school board, a position he had held for several years, with credit and distinction. In his death O'Neill loses one of its most substantial business men and one who had much to do with the upbuilding of this city and county. Coming here as a young man, when this county was undeveloped, he assisted in its development and growth. That he had faith in the future of this section is manifest by the fact that he was a large Holt county land owner at the time of his death. His sudden death will be deeply mourned by a large circle of friends and acquaintances and the Frontier joins the many friends of the family in tendering its condolence in their hour of sorrow. The funeral was held from St. Patrick's church last Sunday morning, Monsignor M.F. Cassidy officiating, burial in Calvary cemetery, and was very largely attended, many coming from other towns in the county for the funeral services. Judge R. R. Dickson, J.A. Donohoe, William Daly, of Emmet, Fred Swingley of Atkinson, J.F. Gallagher and P.J. McManus served as honorary pallbearers, while the active pallbearers were: J.D. Cronin, Frank Froelich, R.R.
