Thomas died Thursday, April 9, 2015, at Avera Creighton Hospital. Thomas Franklin Colwell, son of Frank W. and Jessie (Lentz) Colwell, was born December 16, 1926, four miles east of Niobrara, Nebraska on the TC Ranch. Thomas attended District 150 through the eighth grade. He then graduated from Niobrara High School in 1944. Since the passing of his father in 1942, Thomas helped on the family farm following graduation. He taught school at District 138 for two terms and then taught for one year at District C5 in Santee, Nebraska. Thomas started college at Augustana in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1948 and graduated with a business degree in 1952. He then served in the United States Army for two years, stationed in Germany as a company clerk. Thomas was employed at Firestone in Norfolk, Nebraska as an office/credit employee in 1954. He was united in marriage to Darlene Marie Kalal on October 23, 1955, in Niobrara. They moved to Omaha, Nebraska where Thomas was employed by Massey-Ferguson Implement Store. A daughter, Susan Kay was born on November 3, 1960. In 1961, Thomas and Darlene moved back to Niobrara to the TC Ranch where he farmed for almost 25 years. They moved to Bellevue, Nebraska where he worked as a machinist at G&G Manufacturing in Omaha following his farm sale. Thomas then moved to Yankton, South Dakota where he worked as a security guard at Alumax. In 1996, he retired to Verdigre, Nebraska. Thomas was member of Niobrara Lutheran Church, where he was confirmed in 1942. He was also a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Niobrara and American Legion in Niobrara and Verdigre. Thomas was a sixty year member of Masonic Ionic Lodge of Niobrara. He served on the Niobrara school board for 17 years. Thomas loved to visit and have coffee in the café, read, attend high school sports, play with his grandsons, and drive around, especially in the pasture. Thomas is survived by his daughter, Susan and husband of Lincoln, Nebraska; three grandsons, also of Lincoln; brother, John of Alexandria, Minnesota; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Darlene; brothers, Dean and Lyle Colwell; and stillborn granddaughter, Jenna Marie. ...Provided by Vicki Johnson
