At about the age of 19, Thomas left Ohio and went West, settling for a time in Michigan, and then moving to Dallas County, Iowa, where his older brother William had already settled. Read More	Thomas Gilmore Peppard was born February 18, 1836 near Fredericksburg, Wayne County, Ohio. He was the eighth of nine children born to John & Margery (Moore) Peppard. At about the age of 19, Thomas left Ohio and went West, settling for a time in Michigan, and then moving to Dallas County, Iowa, where his older brother William had already settled. In Spring 1858, he moved to the Kansas Territory and the frontier town of Oskaloosa, where he found work as a carpenter. In September 1858, shortly after the discovery of gold in Colorado, Thomas joined a group of prospectors who went west and set up camp in what later became Denver and Thomas helped to build the first house. Thomas apparently did not prosper and he returned to Oskaloosa. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Thomas was one of the first men in Oskaloosa to respond to the call for volunteers. On May 29, 1861, he went to Leavenworth and enlisted in Co. E, 1st Kansas Regiment, to serve three years. During his service in the army, Thomas participated in a number of battles and skirmishes. On Aug. 10, 1861, he received a severe gunshot wound to the hip during the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, Mo. He never fully recovered from the injury and after his discharge, it impaired his trade as a carpenter. After spending more than a year in hospitals in St. Louis and Leavenworth, Thomas was detailed as a guard to the commissary department of the 17th Army Corps. While serving in that capacity, he acted as a guard aboard the steamer “City of Madison,” which lay at the mouth of the Chickasaw Bayou on the Yazoo River during the Siege of Vicksburg. Thomas suffered several bouts of malaria before his discharge on June 16, 1864 at Leavenworth. Under the 100-day call, he re-enlisted in Co. B of the 17th Kansas Infantry on July 14, 1864 and served as a second lieutenant. He was discharged at Leavenworth on November 16, 1864. After his discharge, Thomas returned to Wayne County, Ohio, to visit his family. Moved by the spirit of patriotism, he again answered the call for volunteers. On February 23, 1865, at Warren, Ohio, he enlisted in the 196th Ohio Infantry and served as sergeant under Capt. F.W. Baker in Company E. At the war’s end, he was discharged from service at Baltimore, Md., September 11, 1865. In his discharge papers he was given honorable mention for bravery. In January 1866, Thomas returned to Oskaloosa where he helped make a home for his widowed mother. On June 17, 1869, Thomas married Maria Hoskinson at Rock Creek, Jefferson County, Kansas. Thomas and Maria spent their married life in Oskaloosa, where he worked as a laborer. Their farmstead was on the western edge of Oskaloosa. They were married only 16 years when death claimed Maria after several months of extreme suffering. Thomas never remarried. His oldest daughters, Madge and Kate, probably helped raise the four younger children. He was an active member of the Jules Williams Post of the GAR and served as its president for some time. According to his obituary, “He was reared in the Presbyterian church, and while not identified with any church, was an attendant when able, and assisted materially for years in the singing. He was of a retiring, modest disposition, faithful and kind as a father.” During the last year of his life, Thomas’ health failed rapidly, due to stomach and heart ailments. His obituary read: “Mr. Peppard was an honest, law-abiding citizen, whose influence was always on the right side, and whose convictions were strong and uncompromising.”
