Applegate of Red Bank committed suicide by shooting himself through the head. The act was committed in his barn on Broad street. None of the family was at home at the time, and it was some little time before the body was found. Mr. Applegate's mind had been giving way for some time. He had acted queerly for two or three years, and this increased as time wore on. A day or two before his death he sold his house and lot on Broad street to Frank P. Blaisdell of New York for $7,312.50. The negotiations for the sale of the property had been going on for some time. On the afternoon when Mr. Applegate committed the act, he came down town and remained only a few minutes. When he went back to the house he took his son's bicycle from the front of the house and wheeled it down to the barn, where he set it against the side of the building. It is supposed that he did this to get his son Charles to come down to the barn in the hope that he would be the person to find his body. then he went in the barn, sat down on the floor, put the muzzle of the revolver under his right ear and pulled the trigger. Death must have been instantaneous. The carotid artery was severed and the blood poured from the wound. After the shot Mr. Applegate's hand fell down on his breast and his body sank backwards to the floor. In this position the body was found. The body was found by Mr. Applegate's wife a short time after the shot was fired. When she came home she missed her husband, and on making a search found his corpse in the barn. The body was still warm when found. Dr. Edwin Field was summoned and he declared that life must have been extinguished almost at once. Mr. Applegate was in comfortable circumstances, though it had been reported for a year or two before his death that he had lost considerable money. He left a sealed letter to his son, which is said to have contained instructions concerning the disposal of his estate. The funeral was held at the house on Monday afternoon. The interment was in Fair View cemetery. Mr. Applegate was born near the Phalanx in 1836. He was a son of Wm. Applegate, who died some years ago, and a brother of Charles E. Applegate of Maple avenue. He acted as clerk for a time in stores in Keyport and Red Bank. He was a bookkeeper in the Second National bank for a time and was a member of the firm of Hendrickson, Applegate & Conover when the present firm of Hendrickson & Applegate first started in business. After he left that firm he bought the stationery business of the estate of Wm. Child. this he sold to his brother-in-law, Frank W. Little, about a year ago. Since that time he had not been engaged in any business. Mr. Applegate was twice married. His first wife was Miss Evelyn Higgins of Keyport. She died shortly after their marriage. His second wife was Miss Henrietta Little, daughter of the late Capt. Asbury Little of Red Bank. Mr. Applegate leaves one son, Charles, a young man about twenty years old.
