Notes for John Kintigh: John Kintigh was born on Christmas day 1803 in Mt Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania John's parent's, Daniel Kintigh and Margaret Fisher, moved from Lancaster County to Westmoreland County Pennsylvania shortly before he was born. He and his two older brothers, Adam and Daniel Jr, were baptized 2-19-1804 at St. John's (German Reformed), Mt Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania John grew up on his father's "plantation" near the present day town of United along with his eight brothers and sisters. Hannah was born 9-9-1808 in St. Martin's Parish, New Brunswick, Canada. Her parents where Thomas Evans, who was born in Ireland, and Rebecca Freeman Westcott, born in New Brunswick. She spent her early years in Canada with her three brothers and one sister. At this time only two of her brothers names are known to me James (died at 96 in Winchester, Ohio) and Isaac (B. 7 May 1814 NB, Canada / D. 8 Apr 1891 Bryan, Ohio). Hannah was evidently literate since she was described as being "a well read woman who kept up to date in her information on current events". It was also stated that she read her bible through three times. In 1817 her family moved from Canada to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania The family made the migration by sailing vessel from New Brunswick to Philadelphia. They then made their way west by wagon to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania near the present town of Greensburg. Hannah's father, Thomas Evans, died sometime around 1825. Her mother, Rebecca, was married again 1-9-1828 at the First Lutheran Church of Greensburg, Pennsylvania to Henry Kintigh by Jonas Mechling. This Henry Kintigh is believed to have been a brother of John's father Daniel Kintigh. John and Hannah were married in Mt. Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania on 11-25-1826. John at the age of 23 and Hannah 17. The couple made their home in Westmoreland County until just before 1830. John and Hannah raised thirteen children, nine living until adulthood. Eleven of the children, known to me, (in order of age) where: Charles William, Abram (died in childhood), Daniel, Mary Ann, Hannah Rebecca II, Isaac , Jacob C. (died in childhood), Thomas Harbaugh , John Edward, James Forest, and Harrison Taylor. Sometime after the birth of their youngest daughter Hannah (Jan of 1834) the family migrated to Lorain County, Ohio. According to Hannah the migration from Pennsylvania to Ohio took place "in a 4 horse old fashioned English Wagon bed with a canvas cover, and 20 days where spent in the coming". The migration to Ohio included John and Hannah Kintigh, along with members of her family including at least her brothers James and Isaac Evans, and her mother and step-father. Some of the members of the group remained in Lorain County. Hannah's step-father Henry Kintigh was buried in the "Kendeigh" Cemetery, Amherst Township, Lorain County. His tombstone reads "Henry Kendeigh, grandfather, died Jan 1837, aged 65 years." On 12-14-1835 Hannah's uncles Albert and Amos Evans, along with Jacob Coy (brother of #32-John Coy), laid out the town that now bears her maiden name, Evansport. Evansport sits along the south bank of the Tiffin River on the border of Williams and Defiance Counties Ohio. This town would play an important role in many of the branches of my family tree for 5 generations. Sometime around late 1835 or early 1836 some of the members of the original group migrated to Williams County. Hannah's mother, Rebecca, settled near her children in Williams County after the 1837 death of Henry Kintigh in Lorain County. Rebecca lived there for around fourteen more years until she was buried in Old Evansport Cemetery. Her tombstone reads "Rebecca wife of Henry Kintigh, died Feb 8 1851, aged 71 years." John Kintigh was the first of his family to have left Pennsylvania for Ohio. In 1837 he returned to Pennsylvania and persuaded some of his family to come back to Ohio with him, promising that the prospects for the future where better there. John's parents and at least two of his brothers, Jacob and William then moved to Williams County, Ohio. It is not known to me what religious denomination that Hannah's father, Thomas Evans, belonged to. Most of her mother's family where Baptist. She was probably raised in the Baptist Church, until the family's migration to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania There she was exposed to the German Reformed Church, since most of the inhabitants of the area where of that congregation (including her husband John). Upon her arrival in Ohio she became associated with the Rural Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church on the Brunersburg circuit. After the couple's arrival in Williams County she helped to found the Evansport Methodist Church and remained a member for the next 70 years. John remained a member of the German Reformed Church for his entire life. The couple made their home in Springfield Township, Williams County, Ohio and raised their remaining seven children. The home that they made for themselves was carved out of the unbroken forest along the banks of the Tiffin River. Hannah described the homestead as "the dearest place to me on earth". John died at the age of 57 on 8-20-1860. He was buried in Old Evansport Cemetery. Old Evansport Cemetery is on the east side of State Road 191, across from New Evansport Cemetery, about 1/2 mile south of Evansport. In 1861 when the Civil War broke out six if John and Hannah's seven sons enlisted for service. All but one, Edward, served until the end of the war. Edward was instantly killed by a rifle shot during the charge on Jonesboro, GA in 1864. William was made a captain, and Isaac was wounded in an engagement near Nashville Tennessee. After John's death Hannah was married again to Rueben Brown at her home in 1862. When Rueben asked her to marry him she would not consent until she had first asked permission from each of her children. Rueben Brown died in 1875. She outlived both husbands, some of her children, and even some of her adult grandchildren. Hannah remained in the old homestead until the at the age of 97, in July of 1906 she moved in with her daughter, Mary Ann Coy-Turney, in the Holgate, Henry County, Ohio home of her granddaughter Ellen Justice. On her 100th birthday, 9-9-1908, a large party was held for her in Holgate. An article in the Henry County Review dated 9-10-1908 details the party. The article included the names of those attending (some from as far away as Missouri, Michigan, Kentucky, and South Dakota). Also included was the statistic of her 52 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren. The writer of the article commented that "for a woman of her age, she is remarkably well preserved". She died two months later on 11-8-1908 and was buried in Old Evansport Cemetery next to her 1st husband John Kintigh. D.E. Rhodes, pastor of the Holgate M.E. Church, presided over the funeral. George Wiltsie, pastor of the M.E. church at Findlay and grandson-in-law, read the memoir and preached the sermon. The funeral text was from Psalms 90:9 "We spend our years as a tale that is told". The man who wrote her obituary in the Henry County Review on 11-19-1908 was evidently a longtime friend, or descendant since he calls her "Grandma Brown". He often quotes her from an interview done on 2-13-1907 at her home. In the obituary he notes the following: "Her religious spirit and life were the most important and prominent factors in her long career; they gave her a charm. She was always doing little thoughtful things that made people gravitate to her. She told me in these words "I pray to God every day to spare me to have some sense as long as I live". That was surely granted and more, so our dear grandmother was given not only a "little sense" but a large degree of the best kind of sense. She must have been by nature highly endowed with a balance and poise that produced a level handiness and practical mindlessness quite marked with a gentleness and sweetness that was contagious. While eyesight dimmed about the four score period, her mind was clear and bright almost to the last, her memory excellent, her hearing somewhat deficient and with all, that form, with those hands and heart that had lovingly and faithfully and persistently cared for children and grandchildren up into her later years, she became much bowed and bent with the weight of years".
