Newell, 77, of Agency, died at 8:30 a.m. today at the home of his son, Don Newell, at 219 East Maple avenue. He suffered a stroke about a week ago and had been ill for the past month. Mr. and Mrs. Newell had spent most of the winter months with their son and daughter-in-law in Ottumwa. The son of Demosthenes and Glorvina Newell, he was born July 23, 1877, in Wapello county. He had spent most of his life in the Agency community. Prior to his retirement several years ago, he was associated with the Spry Bros. Grain Co. in Ottumwa for more than 20 years. His marriage to Byrdie McMillin took place June 3, 1896, near Agency. She survives. He was a member of the Agency Methodist church, and of Olive Branch lodge, No. 21, A.F. & A.M. at Agency. In addition to his wife and son, he is survived by two granddaughters, Mrs. Donald E. Strong of Evanston, Ill., and JoEllen Newell, a student at Iowa State college, and a brother, George Newell of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by six sisters and three brothers. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Agency Methodist church, in charge of the Rev. Chester A. Waterman. Burial will be in the Agency cemetery, with Masonic services at the grave. The body will remain at the Jay funeral home until 1:20 p.m. Sunday.
