Description	:	My Dad was the seventh of eleven children born to Hamilton Greenbury and Ida Irene Simpson. He was born on the Simpson farm, a 147-acre tract that had been in the Simpson family since 1841. It was a place that he dearly loved. Read More	My Dad was the seventh of eleven children born to Hamilton Greenbury and Ida Irene Simpson. He was born on the Simpson farm, a 147-acre tract that had been in the Simpson family since 1841. It was a place that he dearly loved. The old family doctor, Dr. Sam Nichols, would come on horseback and stay overnight. He never took payment, but would come back at Thanksgiving or Christmas to get a turkey. The farm was a special place. All of the children worked hard helping out. Their entertainment was playing in the corn shed, riding horses, and playing ball in the evenings. One of the stories that was often told about my Dad was the day he played hookey from school and hid in the hay mow. When his Papa could not find his ax later that evening, Dad told him where he had left it, revealing that he had been watching his father split wood from the hay mow. This got him in trouble but provided many laughs over the years. On Christmas Eve each child placed a cardboard box with his name on it around the dining room table. It would be filled the next day with a toy, candy, a firecracker, and two oranges. At Easter they again placed their cardboard boxes around the table and received candy and a couple of dyed eggs. My father walked several miles to school but did not go any further than the eighth grade because he said he did not have any shoes. Instead he helped out on the farm. He played baseball and he loved to tell how he was a good pitcher. He bought himself a Gene Autry guitar and taught himself how to play, and he played with other musicians at the Dayton Dance Hall. He also yodeled and played the harmonica, which he was still able to play for us this past Christmas. He had a sense of humor and had many funny sayings, such as: Dog My Cats, Scat, All Right, Yabba-dabba-doo. He always called taking a nap, "taking five." He called the grandchildren "pelicans" and had other special names for each one. He always went through the house singing Gene Autry songs, like "Back in the Saddle Again," and he sounded just like him, as well as many other cowboy songs. He loved westerns and never tired of them. He loved Jimmie Rodgers. He was a farmer first, and then a carpenter like his grandfather who had built many houses around Dayton. Dad had built our home after we moved from the farm up closer to the main road. He also helped build Uncle Bob's house, and houses for Tommy & Donny. He worked in DC as a union carpenter, and he loved to tell how he had worked on the Russian Embassy and many other buildings around DC, including the National Zoo. He had made Jesus his savior and was baptized in a creek and was a faithful member of the Dayton Foursquare Church, serving on the board, and helping to build the parsonage. I love to tell how my Dad had a bus ministry with his Studebaker car. He picked up several families on Greenbridge Road and hauled all of us to church, dropped us off, and then went back for more including Mrs. Wolfe who lived quite a distance away. After breakfast, he would spend each morning reading his Bible and praying for each member of the family. He prayed out loud, and would often break into prayer sitting in the back of the car as I was driving him and Mom somewhere. He was the one who wanted to have a prayer over us before we left to go to our homes. We prayed together many times as a family, holding hands in a circle. When his eyesight grew so dim that he no longer could read the printed pages of the Bible, and could no longer work his crossword puzzles, I printed out the 91st Psalm for him in huge print, and he recited that every morning. And then, Mom began to read the Bible to him before they went to bed. We had many special family times and vacations. One of my favorite memories was our trip to the Outer Banks. After dinner every night we would all go for a walk on the beach and dodge the ghost crabs. Dad really seemed to enjoy all of us being together. He never got in the ocean or in the pool, but he was always there watching us and the grandchildren. In his later years he grew quieter, but he never tired of talking about his life as a boy and growing up on the Simpson farm. Although he was resistant to the move to Hagerstown, he had many new experiences the two years that he was there. He loved sitting on the front porch and greeting the neighbors as they came for their mail. We took them out to eat, and took them for many drives in the country. In his new environment, he met several new people, including the Wolfe family who ran a vegetable and fruit stand up on the mountain (as he would say). He and Mr. Wolfe became instant friends, sharing stories of getting potatoes in. We took him to see the Wolfe's in December, and they always teased each other about helping dig potatoes. Mr. Wolfe told him that he loved him. Dad called them the old people up on the mountain and always wondered what they were doing. I am so blessed to have had my Dad & Mom all these years and to have had so many family times. I'm comforted knowing that they are together, they are with their Savior, and we do not grieve as those who have no hope. I am convinced of what God's Word tells up about Heaven. Jesus said, "I go to prepare a place for you that where I am there you might be also." And it is a wonderful place with no more sorrow and no more pain. My parents are not in our past......they are in our future if you know Jesus as your Savior.
