Music was provided by Bette Fogel. Interment was at Gregory IOOF Cemetery in Gregory. Tom Laprath was born on January 12,1945 in Gregory. He was the son of Hans Thomas Laprath and Frieda Christiana (Manke) Laprath. He was the son of Hans Thomas Laprath and Frieda Christiana (Manke) Laprath. Tom was one of eight children born to Hans and Christina: Hansie, Fred, Richard, William (Billy), Herman, Mary, and Virginia. Tom left home at an early age, completing his GED thru the courses from the American School, Chicago, IL. He spent his time in Missoula, MT, working for his friend Roger Bennett with whom he hunted and fished the Montana mountains and the Pacific Ocean. In his mid-twenties, Tom spent more time in South Dakota planting the crops and putting up hay on the Sutton Ranch at Bonesteel. He worked road construction driving heavy equipment and D-8 cats for Schweigert Construction at Dallas and Shimkat Construction at Pierre. He helped build the Robertson Dam at Gregory. In 1971, he married Gwen Anderson Laprath. They divorced after 18 years of marriage, but Tom remained close to his sons. Benjamin Roger Laprath was born on January 12, 1979 in Pierre. A second son, Samuel Thomas James Laprath was born on May 6,1988. He spent many hours watching his sons play baseball and football. Both boys remember working in the hay field putting up alfalfa with their dad. Both boys learned his love of fishing in ponds and on the Missouri River. During this time, Tom built two huge machinery sheds for himself and his brothers Hansie and Billy. Tom bought his own semi gravel truck in 1978 and began hauling gravel with Kenny and Doug Gossard on the Cheyenne River Reservation and for Tripp County and Gregory Counties for a few years, before starting his own township graveling and grading business. For several years, he bought hay and hauled it to feedlots. Later he would raise commercial alfalfa and alfalfa seed and haul that hay to Nebraska. After a plane crash in 1998, his friends and relatives were instrumental in helping Tom survive and grow. Tom spent many hours traveling to Iowa to see his sons. His diabetes was severe and he was often very ill when he arrived in later months in Iowa. His faith in God helped him survive 19 years after the plane crash. Tom Laprath, age 72, of Dallas passed away on September 30, 2017 at the Elmwood Nursing Home, Onawa, IA. Tom is survived by sons Ben of Whiting, IA, Sam of Sloan, IA; sister Virginia Gordon of Laurel, MT and brother Billy Laprath of Dallas. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Ott, brothers Fred, Herman, Hansie and Richard.
