Description	:	Thomas James Mortimer, 73, of Wayland, Missouri, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at 7:32 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa. Thomas Mortimer was born on March 26, 1931 in rural Canton, Missouri. He was the son of Thomas Martin Alfred and Violet May Davis Mortimer. He married Delores Brookhart on December 22, 1951 in Canton, Missouri. She survives. He served with the United States Army during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart and Silver Star. Read More	Thomas James Mortimer, 73, of Wayland, Missouri, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at 7:32 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa. Thomas Mortimer was born on March 26, 1931 in rural Canton, Missouri. He was the son of Thomas Martin Alfred and Violet May Davis Mortimer. He married Delores Brookhart on December 22, 1951 in Canton, Missouri. She survives. He served with the United States Army during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart and Silver Star. He had lived in Keokuk from 1951 until 1966 and for the past thirty-nine years had lived in Wayland. He had been employed as a supervisor at Dryden's-Shellor Globe for forty-one years until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the Alexandria Baptist Church, American Legion Post #41 and the V.F.W. Post #3508 in Keokuk, and served as a Trustee at the Keokuk Eagles Club. He was a member of the Keokuk B.P.O.E. Lodge #106 and had served as Exulted Ruler. Survivors include his wife, Delores Mortimer of Wayland, Missouri; five children, Sherry Bunker and her husband, David, of Wayland, Missouri, Michael J. Mortimer and his wife, Donna, of Donnellson, Iowa, Debra Brown and her husband, Tony, of Kahoka, Missouri, Tom Mortimer and his wife, Carol, of Dumfries, Virginia and Sara Coffman and her husband, Larry, of Kirksville, Missouri; seven brother and sisters, Larry "Jack" Mortimer of Keokuk, Raymond Mortimer of Monmouth, Illinois, Fuller Mortimer of Keokuk, Bobby Dean of Keokuk, Rosetta Worster of Alexandria, Missouri, Betty Miller of Keokuk and Peggy Conover of Port St. Louis, Florida; fifteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Violet Mortimer. Services were Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at 10:00 A.M. at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Dan Deatrick officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites. Visitation was Monday, February 21, 2005 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk after 2:00 P.M. with the family meeting friends from 6-8 P.M. There was a public Elks Memorial service held at 6:00 PM Monday at DeJong's Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Elks Lodge # 106 Scholarship Fund. ******* SILVER STAR CITATION: The Silver Star is awarded to Private First Class Thomas J. Mortimer, RA17260475, Infantry, United States Army, a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, who displayed gallantry in action against an armed enemy on 30 January 1951 in the vicinity of Sinchon, Korea. Private Mortimer was a member of a patrol which, attacked and surrounded by a numerically superior enemy, formed a perimeter defense on high ground. When the only machine gun with the patrol was threatened by a strong enemy assault, Private Mortimer left his position and, under intense hostile fire, went to the aid of the gunner. The enemy concentrated their efforts to destroy the machine gun, and the gunner soon exhausted his ammunition. With the enemy advancing toward the gun, Private Mortimer charged fearlessly into their midst with fixed bayonet, inflicting heavy losses upon them and singlehandedly causing them to withdraw. Largely as a result of his heroic action his patrol was able to break out of the enemy trap. The gallantry displayed by Private Mortimer reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
