Squires celebrate fiftieth wedding anniversary. Sarah Ann Armstrong, born near Bloomington, (McLean Co.), IL., 16 Apr. 1857 and Thomas J. Squires was born 8 May 1846, near Courtland, New York. They were married at Delhi, IA on 3 March 1881, and that interesting event occurred fifty years ago today, Thursday, 3 March 1931, when they celebrated their "Golden Wedding Day". There is an old saying that "A bad beginning means for a good ending." This has been proven true in the case of these worthy and honored friends. Fifty years ago their wedding day dawned, a cold, sun shiny day, with a keen, cutting wind. A heavy snow, badly drifted, could only be traversed on horseback. The groom nothing daunted, started on the seven mile trip and was well on his way, when he suddenly remembered that he had left his license towed, safely tucked in the old clock at home. There was no help for it, he had to go back. Securing the license, he saddled a fresh horse, and started off once more. Arriving at his destination, he was met by the information that the minister, whose services he had previously engaged and who lived thirty miles away, and was coming by train, was stranded, the train blocked by the drifting snow. Nothing daunted, a courier was sent by horseback to a town one and a half miles away, where a minister was found, willing to brave the trip, and at last these two lives were united. For fifty years since that eventful day, they have gone on together, through adversity and prosperity, through sunshine and shadow. It was in 1888 that they caught the fever to "go west" and came to Kansas. They located on their farm, northeast of Holton, and, through industry and frugality, they accumulated a competence of this world's goods, reared their fine family of nine boys and girls, and in 1911 they decided to retire from active work, bought their present beautiful home and moved to Holton. This Wedding Day is a sharp contrast to that first one; an ideal day. For weeks their daughters had planned all the details. Today at noon, the family sat down to a sumptuous wedding dinner. The table was centered by a wonderful wedding cake, gold angel food, three tiers and decorated in gold and white. On the top was a heart shaped cake on which stood a miniature bride and groom. At two p.m. the rooms were filled by friends, who were entertained by a very interesting program. The old song, "The Old Gray Bonnet" was revised to date and sung by Mrs. Hancuff. Then all present were asked to join in singing "Annie Laurie". A most unusual number was the reading of "John Gilpin's Ride", contributed by the 86 year old bridegroom. Original poems were read by each of the four daughters, Miss Achsah Squires, Mrs. Laura Hancuff, Mrs. Wayne Squires, and Mrs. Myrtle McDonald. Miss Elsie Hickman also contributed an original poem, and Mrs. Daguedimm read one, written and dedicated to "My Dear Old Friends", by Rev. T. B. Adell of Manhattan, KS. Mr. Jesse Bumgardner paid a high tribute to the worth of the friends he had known so many years. He also spoke touchingly of his love for the twin girls, Ina and Ida, pupils of his at Bateman School, and of their early crossing the river. "Silver Threads Among the Gold" was sung my Messrs. J. W. Terrell, Mrs. Minnie Spiker and Mrs. Howard Ireland contributed Carrie Jacobs Bond's beautiful "I Love You Truly". This was followed by a piano solo, "Remembrances of the Past" by Mrs. Dimm and then, to the strains of "Lohengrin's Wedding March" the fifty year bride and groom, preceded by their pastor, Rev. R. F. Porter, and their granddaughter, Miss Edith Squires, who carried the wedding ring on a white satin pillow, marched in and took their places under a beautiful arch of green and gold and there renewed their vows of love and fidelity, and then the fifty year old bridegroom slipped the fifty year old wedding ring over the finger where it had been worn all these years and sealed it with a kiss. Congratulations and well wishes were showered on the friends we all delighted to honor. The mammoth wedding cake was cut and served to the guests, together with white brick ice cream, centered with a golden bell. During the hours of "Open House", from three to five, many more friends came to offer congratulations, and again from seven to eight, the house was filled with guests. The gifts and flowers were many, and very beautiful; and there were telegrams of felicitation and good wishes, and cards galore. And as a climax, a hastily arranged party secured some bells and other noisemakers and proceeded to give them an old fashioned charivari, as in the good old days of yore. And so, last, "The end of the perfect Golden Wedding Day" came and we parted, with many good wishes for many more such happy days.
