Tom was born to Clifford and Virginia (Pink) Fitzgerald of Clare on March 14, 1944. Following his mother's death he lived with various aunts and uncles until late 1948 when he was placed in St. Anthony's Home where he lived for four and a half years in Sioux City, Iowa. Read More	The Fort Dodge Messenger Tuesday, January 11, 2011 Thomas Michael Fitzgerald passed away Saturday, January 8th at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines following a lengthy illness. Tom was born to Clifford and Virginia (Pink) Fitzgerald of Clare on March 14, 1944. Following his mother's death he lived with various aunts and uncles until late 1948 when he was placed in St. Anthony's Home where he lived for four and a half years in Sioux City, Iowa. In 1953 the family took up residence in Fort Dodge. Tom was a 1962 graduate of St. Edmond High School. He then entered the U. S. Army and was stationed in Japan. After honorable discharge in 1965 he returned to Iowa. He spent time in political organizing work in 1972, 1974 and 1980 campaigns and served as Executive Director of the Polk County Democrats in 1972. Tom was an avid football fan, and was an exceptional football player himself, at St. Edmond HS and in the US Army in Japan. In Fort Dodge he worked at several businesses and was the operator of the Fireside Lounge and owner-operator of the County Cork House and Dirty Nellie's Deli. Tom operated a home remodeling business over the last 25 years, in Fort Dodge, Paton and Des Moines. He was united in marriage to Oye Sillapatavat on December 30, 2002 in Des Moines, IA. Tom is survived by his wife; step-daughter, May Suttabongoch and step-son, Mu Suttabongoch; brothers Jerry (Shari) of Fort Dodge, Jim (Judy) of Arden Hills, MN; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dan; and infant sister, Mary Kathryn. A visitation will be held Wednesday in Des Moines, IA at the Quality Inn and Suites Event Center (downtown) from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. January 12th, followed by a visitation service at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home in Fort Dodge, IA from 4 to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the discretion of the family.
