Canfield, one of our most honored and esteemed citizens, after a serious illness of about ten days. From the first the members of the family and close friends realized that the end was near, but though his death was expected at any time, it came as a severe shock to his family and caused expressions of sincere sorrow among his countless friends through the city and county. Death was caused by uraemic poisoning and other complications coupled with the infirmities of old age. His five children were at his bedside during the days of his final illness and tenderly cared for the beloved father, realizing that he could not be with them long. His death was peaceful. He apparently had no pain but slept calmly into death. The funeral services were held from the home at 2:00 o’clock Tuesday afternoon and from the Marion street church at 2:30. The Rev. A.L. Golden had charge of the services assisted by other ministers of the city. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, attesting the general love and esteem in which the deceased was held by all who know him. The choir sang special music and the Rev. Golden preached an eloquent tribute to the life work and character of the departed. The pall bearers were all old friends of Mr. Canfield in life. Despite the inclemency of the weather the church was packed with sorrowing relatives and friends, come to pay a last tribute of respect to the memory of a good man whom all had honored and esteemed in life. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in Linwood cemetery beside those of his wife and mother who preceded him death. Thomas Newton Canfield, son of Hilen and Mary (Langdon) Canfield, was born in Chardon, Ohio, August 31, 1828. He grew to young manhood in his native state and in 1849 departed for California where he remained about three years and then returned to Ohio. A few years later he removed to Illinois, where on February 17, 1857, he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Logan, who passed away in Boone November 14, 1901. To them were born five children, Mrs. Mary E. Dale, H.H. Canfield, Katherine Canfield and C.C. Canfield of Boone and Mrs. Lucy Schunemean of Newton, Iowa. All are living and were present at his death and burial and to them is given the sincere sympathy of the entire community in the loss of a noble Christian father and counsellor. In 1862 he enlisted in the union army as a private in Co. A. 114th Illinois volunteer infantry, and served throughout the war with distinction and honor and credit to his country. He was in many of the fiercest battles of the war and on the 3rd of August, 1865 was mustered out with top rank of captain and honorably discharged from the service. Immediately after his discharge, in August 1865 he came to Boone and his family followed in November of the same year. In company with his brother in laws, Carlton and Oliver Logan, he purchased the wholesale and retail grocery business of Quinn & Harris and he remained connected with this business until his death. Forty three years ago he embarked in the coal business west of Boone, opening and developing some of the richest coal fields in central Iowa, and he remained actively engaged in this business also until the time of his death, and was one of the best known and most active and progressive coal dealers in the central west. His properties were all closed and many business houses of the city were closed during the hours of his funeral. He comes of a family of noted war veterans, dating back to the sixteenth century. One of his direct ancestors was a factor in the early colonial wars, another was in the thickest of the fighting and war councils of the Revolutionary war, another was engaged in defense of his country in the war of 1812. Mr. Canfield himself served honorably throughout the civil war and in the Spanish American war his son, Col. H.H. Canfield, was found at the front fighting the battles of his country. When twelve years old Mr. Canfield embraced the Christian faith and lived a devoted and consistent Christian life until the time of his death. He was ever among the most active and interested workers for the welfare of his church and for the cause of Christ and his wise and generous councils will be sadly missed. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge of the Fifth ward and of the Loyal Legion G.A.R. and when health permitted always took an active interest in the affairs of these organizations. But his chief delight was in the home circle, where he was ever a loving and devoted husband and father and a wise family counsellor, and it is here that his loss will be most deeply felt. Among his business associates also he will be greatly missed, for during his active years no labor or service was too great or arduous for him to give to the welfare and up building of the city and county. He has earned his rest well. Peaceful be his sleep. As the Rev. Golden said his life’s influence will go on and on as long as men shall live upon the earth.
