Description	:	Thomas Ottoway Sterling was born May 21, 1836 at Pearisburg, Giles Co., Va. He came to Harrisonburg in 1849. Before the railroad was built to Harrisonburg in 1869 Mr. Sterling drove the old stage coach up and down the Valley Turnpike between Harrisonburg and Winchester. He was a upholster by trade. During the Civil War he was salt commissioner for Rockingham County. After the close of the war he worked at this trade for several years and later opened up a meat market under the firm name of T. Before the railroad was built to Harrisonburg in 1869 Mr. Sterling drove the old stage coach up and down the Valley Turnpike between Harrisonburg and Winchester. He was a upholster by trade. O. Sterling & Son. He retired from active business three or four years ago, but occasionally worked at upholstering furniture. Mr. Sterling had been a member of the Methodist Church in Harrisonburg for a number of years. In 1867 he married Miss Martha McGlaughlin, a sister of Messers J. H. and Charles R. McGlaughlin, of Harrisonburg, by whom he is survived with three sons – Charles, Gardner, and Ottoway Sterling. Funeral service will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock.
