Gardner Sterling, aged 65, dean of Harrisonburg printers and for many years an employee of the Daily News-Record, died suddenly at his home on East Market Street yesterday evening at 7:30. Although he had been in ill health for the past year and was unable to work, his death came as a great shock to all who knew him and especially his fellow workers at the News-Record. He was stricken while sitting in the kitchen of his home and died before medical aid could be summoned. News of his death was received with great sorrow in the News-Record office where he had been a faithful employee for many years. He was one of the oldest employees of the paper, having served his apprenticeship on the old Rockingham Register which was published on East Market street. He then continued with the Daily News and the News-Record. Feeble health caused him to quit his position as a compositor on the News-Record some months ago after a long service with the paper. His 30 years made him one of the oldest employees of the paper. He was loved and respected by all of his fellow workmen and his passing means the loss of Harrisonburg's oldest printer. Mr. Sterling was a son of the late Thomas and Martha Sterling and was born Feb. 18, 1872 in Harrisonburg where he spent his entire life and was a well known resident. Besides his wife, who was Miss Arlelia Miller before marriage, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Leon Werner, of Harrisonburg, and Mrs. Carl Wiseman, of Roanoke; two brothers, Charles Sterling, of Harrisonburg, and Ott Sterling of Christiansburg. He is also survived by two grandsons, James Franklin Werner and Donald Lee Werner, of Harrisonburg. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at three o'clock from the Presbyterian Church with burial in Woodbine Cemetery. (Daily News-Record, Harrisonburg, VA, Sat., Sep 11, 1937)
