Read More	Newspaper Obituary HOLD SERVICES FOR COUNTY PIONEER - - The death of Tom R Travis of Sidney, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S.H. Omer of Tabor, on Saturday, April 10, took from southwest Iowa another of its early pioneers. His parents, Abraham Travis and Ruth Stella Barger Travis, came to Fremont county in 1852. Their wedding trip west was a journey from Fairfield, Iowa. They came in a covered wagon drawn by oxen. It was on the 6th day of May that they landed in Sidney and that night camped on the court house square. The first court house, a frame building then was being constructed. The county was so new that his parents first received their mail from Austin, the original county seat. Mr. Travis was born near Sidney, June 14, 1855, eighty-seven years ago, in the dugout beneath the log cabin home. His mother had sought the comfort of this spot to escape the intense heat of that day. His first home was in a log cabin. Later he lived in a clap-board structure built of native cottonwood. His first school was in a log building. His first playmates were Indian children of the migratory tribes that spent the fall and winter hunting and trapping on their old hunting grounds. His first white playmate was E.A. Shirley, who recently passed away. His first corn planting experience was to follow in the furrow and drop the seed every other step. He was 12 years old when the first railroad came into Fremont county. May 6, 1877, he welcomed Miss Sicily Page to be his companion. She was a native of Decatur, Iowa, and came with her parents to Fremont county, February 16, 1864, during the Civil War. Six children were born to them, five of whom are living. A son, Samuel Abraham Travis, died at the age of 22 months. The other members of the family are Mrs. S.W. Omer of Tabor, Mrs. W.B. Torrence of Glenwood, C.E. Travis of Clarinda, Edith D Travis at home, Thomas Perry Travis of Sidney. The family circle now includes 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Five of the grandsons are in the service of their country, two being overseas. Mr. Travis was one of 12 children. He was the oldest of the eight sons. But four of his family are now living: Charles E Travis of Sidney; R.W. Travis of Sidney; Mrs. H.H. Hayes of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. A.D. Murphy of Braddyville, Missouri. He was a member of the Presbyterian church in Sidney. It was organized June 30, 1855, the same year and month he was born. As a lad of 15 he attended the dedication of the church, Nov. 13, 1870. As a native son of Fremont county, his life spanned almost 88 years of the 94 years of its history. During his life time the railroads have laid their lines of steel where once was prairie sod and concrete pavement has ribboned some of the old trails. The wilderness with its log cabins and its abundance of wild game has given way to the most modern mansions and the finest of registered stock. The age of the knitting needle, the tallow dip, the home spun has been succeeded by the sewing mating, the electric light the modern tailored clothes. Barn raisings, husking bees, spelling matches, singing schools, literary societies, great torchlight political parades are now but a memory. His companion for many years, who shared these experiences with him, must now relate the facts of their pioneer knowledge and experiences. Brief services were held in the S.W. Omer home in Tabor at two o'clock. The male quartet from the Faith Home sang two numbers. At three o'clock, services were conducted in the Crawford Funeral Home in Sidney, conducted by the Rev. Peter Jacobs of Tabor. A trio, Mrs. Vernon Johnson, Mrs. Don Clayton, Mrs. Clyde E Thomas, with Mrs. Elizabeth Adams at the piano, sang three numbers, "Life is like a mountain railroad," "The last mile of the way," "We shall meet beyond the river." Mrs. Will Martin, Mrs. Earl Elliott, Mrs. Pauline Kraschel were in charge of the flowers. Casket bearers are members of the Knights of Pythias lodge of Sidney. Mr. Travis had been a member of the order for forty years. They were Murl Otte, Richard Golden, Ernest Travis, Grover Magel, Carl Greedy, W.V. Price. Carl K Frederickson was in charge of the Pythian memorial service at the grave. Interment was made at Sidney.
