Description	:	Knowledge of Tom's early life begins on the ranch of his father and mother Louis Cobell and Mary R. Lavalle-Cobell. At age ten, he lived at the Holy Family Mission boarding school on Two Medicine River. Tom ran away from the Mission several times when the Jesuit Priests wouldn't let the boys speak Indian, and were sometimes cruelly strict. He also attended the Indian Service School in Genoa, Nebraska. Tom dropped out of school at the 8th grade. He later told stories of his youth when he and his brothers rode the freight trains out to the West Coast. At one time, he worked as an Elevator Boy in the Smith Tower in Seattle. Early adventures included brewing whiskey in a Portland Hotel and bootlegging whiskey during Prohibition, resulting in a stint in Montana State Prison, paying off the errors of his youth. His first marriage in 1927 was to Goldie E. Hawkins. No children were born of that union. In the photo, he is holding his nephew Louie. In 1936, Tom began a forty year marriage with Angie Brown-Williamson-Cobell until his death. No children were born from that union, but Tom raised his stepdaughter Violet as his own child. Tom and Angie began ranching on the North Fork of Milk River in the 1940's and later obtained a Tribal loan to begin a ranch down on Seville of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. Tom was the first Blackfeet Indian to pay off the "start-up" loan for Indian ranchers. He later bought land at Meriweather and ranched there until his retirement in 1964. He was a successful sheep rancher and hired up to fourteen ranch hands during Spring lambing. Often, his brothers Bill and Dewey Cobell worked for Tom on the Meriweather ranch. One year, he filled in as an appointed member of the Blackfeet Tribal Council. After his retirement, he bought a home in Browning and lived out his retirement years in arranging land consolidation on the reservation. He raised his stepdaughter Violet as his own child and was a loving and generous husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
