On July 2, 1968, Tom entered the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He served on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk, where he was a marine mechanic. Tom was honorably discharged on April 1, 1970, but continued to serve with the U.S. Naval Reserves until July 1, 1974.
