He was a friend, true and tried. His last conversation with me was in regards to my relation to the church, and I feel that one of my strongest cords which bound me to the LaBelle church has been cut in sunder. His home holds a unique place in my heart as it was my first place to break bread in Missouri. Judge Thomas Smith Bradshaw was born in Lewis county, Missouri, near Newark, March 27 [sic], 1843; married Miss Nannie Catharine Hopkins, in Rockingham county, Virginia, October 27, 1865, and to this union eight children were born, viz: Gabriel Smith, Annie Virginia, Archible Hopkins, Elizabeth Chrisman, Lewis, Nannie Kate, Joseph William and Zulah Love, five of whom survive, viz: Gabriel, of Custer county, Montana; Mrs. M. E. Cambell, of Green City, Missouri; A. H. Bradshaw, LaBelle, Lewis county; Lewis and Mrs. A. F. Hall, of Thomas, Oklahoma, besides his wife, two grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Mary E. Kendrick. The latter out of a family of eleven children is the only remaining one. The deceased enlisted on the Confederate side of the Civil war and was honored as lieutenant. He was the son of Smith Bradshaw, and while in the service of his country he became acquainted with Miss Hopkins, whom he married, and who proved a most faithful wife to the end. He died Monday, May 16, 1910, at the age of 67 years. After the war he again settled in Lewis county, near Air Point school house, Salem township, and engaged in farming. He afterwards moved to Steffenville, and while there received the appointment of judge of Lewis county, which place he honorably held until his death. He was serving his second term, which testifies to the well placed confidence the people reposed in him. He moved to the town of LaBelle two years ago, and was a member of the LaBelle Presbyterian church. The congregation honored him with the position of ruling elder, which he held his lifetime. He had been in failing health for three years, particularly the last four months, yet in spite of his physical disability he attended court. Fair and just by nature he was able to see on which side the right of a controversy lay; open-minded and patient he gave each side an opportunity to state its case. Such is the life record of Judge Bradshaw, so far as mere facts and data can make it. But they tell us nothing of his noble use-; fulness and Christian character. He was of a quiet disposition, but you could always count on him doing his part. His faith in his Savior was real and life controlling. In the home, in the church and among a wide circle of relatives and friends this good man will be sadly missed. His mission accomplished, his labors ended, his spirit is at rest, and his body was laid in the cemetery at Newark, after services at his late residence, conducted by the writer, awaiting the resurrection of the just. We extend our deepest and tenderest sympathy to the bereaved family and sorrowing friends. And so I plant beside his tomb the oak, as the emblem of his strength; I garland it with the lily, as the token of his gentleness and kindness. I deck it with the rose, as a symbol of his fidelity and efficacy, and the accacia, as his hope in immortal life; and for his epitaph I inscribe the words of Micah: He did justly, he loved mercy, and he walked humbly with his God.
