Description	:	Shelburne Economist - August 17, 1916 Thomas Tate, whose death took place at his home on Aug. 2, was born in County Antrim, Ireland, July 8, 1834. When about 15 years of age, he came with his parents to this country and settled in the Township of Pickering. Read More	Shelburne Economist - August 17, 1916 Thomas Tate, whose death took place at his home on Aug. 2, was born in County Antrim, Ireland, July 8, 1834. When about 15 years of age, he came with his parents to this country and settled in the Township of Pickering. There he learned the flour milling business and for some years was engaged as a miller in the village of Greenwood. In 1858 he married Ellen Jenkins and with his young bride came to this district and settled on a farm in Amaranth, being one of the first settlers in that township. They had many hardships in the early days, but they worked hard, cleared the farm, and raised a large family. About 15 years ago they retired to Grand Valley. Mr. Tate was also one of the pioneer members of the Methodist church, worshipped in the old building of the first Methodist Church here, and exerted quite an influence in having the new edifice built on the site of the original church about 20 years ago. He is survived by his wife, four sons (William Thomas in Amaranth, Stewart in Grand Valley, Crawford in Bluevale and Frank in Palmerston), and three daughters (Mrs. H. Fennell of Grand Valley, Mrs. J. A. Simpson of Amaranth, and Mrs. T. Lewis of Vancouver). The funeral took place on Friday to Greenwood Cemetery, Orangeville, many old friends from the township attending. His four sons and two son-in-laws, H. Fennell and J. Simpson were pallbearers, while the service was conducted by his pastor, Rev. A. N. Cooper. – Grand Valley Star-Vidette.
