Thomas was the eldest child of Esther & William Tinkler. He came to America from England with his parents and siblings, arriving in New York in 1849, where the California gold strike was making news. The family ultimately settled in Jo Davies Co., IL. In 1852, Thomas and his brother John made their way to the Pacific coast, where they engaged in trading & farming. During their stay, John died in 1858. Thomas returned to Illinois in 1859 and later that year married Kezia Raison. By 1863, Thomas and Kezia had 3 children. In that year, Thomas and his brother Jonathan traveled to San Francisco via New York and the Isthmus of Panama, then on to Idaho in search of gold. They returned to IL, in 1864. In 1875, Thomas and his son, James, traveled with all their belongings to Kansas to homestead. His parents, wife and family came later by train. They settled in Gypsum Township, 2 miles east on Section I. Thomas, his brothers Jonathan and William were among the group who founded Gypsum City.
