Cole was born in Washington County, Wisconsin, February 11, 1859, and passed away at the Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska on June 6, 1942, being 83 years, 4 months and 25 days old. He graduated from the West Bend High School of Wisconsin. From there he went to school in Chicago, Illinois. Later graduated from the law office of Barney & Kuechinmeister. Cole was born in Washington County, Wisconsin, February 11, 1859, and passed away at the Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska on June 6, 1942, being 83 years, 4 months and 25 days old. He graduated from the West Bend High School of Wisconsin. From there he went to school in Chicago, Illinois. Later graduated from the law office of Barney & Kuechinmeister. Practiced law in Colby, Wisconsin from 1883 to 1888. May 16, 1888, he moved to Nelson, Nebraska, on account of the health of his wife, where he practiced law until the time of his death. He was united in marriage to Angeline A. Warren March 11, 1882. To this union were born: Parton who passed away in infancy and Vivian J. Cole of Nelson. Mrs. Cole preceding him in death, February 3, 1930. Mr. Cole united with the Presbyterian church after coming to Nelson; was elected an elder a short time later, in which office he served for almost fifty years. He was elected as Lay delegate to represent the Presbytery of Hastings at Baltimore on May 27, 1927. He was superintendent of the Sunday School for many years and taught in the same for almost fifty years. He was a Master Mason; a member of Nelson Lodge No. 77 of Nelson, Nebraska and member of Knights Templar Palmyra Commandry No. 27 of Superior, Nebraska. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 27, in which he held the office of Worthy Patron several years. Mr. Cole was a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association; also of the Nuckolls County Bar Association. He was also attorney for the Burlington Railroad for many years. He leaves to mourn his passing; a daughter, Vivian, three sisters, Mrs. Esther Philips of West Bend, Wisconsin, Mrs. Martha Davis and Miss Ida M. Cole of Cedarburg, Wisconsin, and many nieces and nephews, besides a large number of friends. Two brothers, John F. Cole of Marshfield, Wisconsin, and Richard Cole of West Bend, Wisconsin; three sisters, Mrs. Kate Connell, and Mrs. Ella Connell of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Miss Lillie Cole of Cedarburg, Wisconsin, preceded him in death. We cannot see beyond the garden wall! And yet the rose that blossomed here And filled our hearts with love and cheer, Is growing on the other side in all The beauty of a fuller life. - The call Of death should not cause us to grieve, But let us hope, let us believe That joy eternal waits beyond the wall. The funeral service was held in the Presbyterian church at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, with burial in the Nelson cemetery(sic). The pastor, Rev. W. Byrd Ray opened the service and read the obituary, after which Rev. John Caldwell of Laurel, a former pastor of this church, delivered the sermon and eulogized the deceased for his splendid Christian character and the support of the Church and all worthwile undertakings in our community. The choir sang "Abide With Me" and "The Lord is My Shepherd," and a male quartette (sic) -- J.O. Weyand, Claude Flower, B.T. Christensen and F.A. Scherzinger, concluded the service with "Remember Me." The pallbearers were C.R. Imler, Earl Greenwood, W.W. Hawley, P.A. Peterson, W.C. Hall and H.H. Hite. The following members of the 7th Judicial Bar Association were honorary pallbearers: Robert Waring, Charles H. Sloan and William Sloan of Geneva; J.W. Boyd, Leonard Jaob and Robert H. Downing of Superior; Albert Pike and Walter Weiss of Hebron; W.E. Garrison and H.A. Brubaker of Nelson; and Stanley Bartos of Wilber. The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, June 11, 1942 ===== MEMORIAL SERVICE TUESDAY FOR T.W. COLE A memorial service was held Tuesday afternoon in the District Court room here by members of the District Bar Association for the late Thomas W. Cole who passed to his final abode on June 6th last. At the appointed hour a goodly number of citizens had gathered in the court room, when the members of the bar of Nelson and surrounding towns of the District entered in a body. Judge Stanley Bartos "called court" and in a few well chosen remarks stated the purpose of the gathering. The male quartette sang two numbers and Rev. W. Byrd Ray gave the invocation. County Judge W.E. Garrison read the resolutions adopted. Hon. Chas. H. Sloane of Geneva made an extensive and highly laudable address honoring his dear friend and neighbor with whom he had been a co-worker in the profession for more than a half century. Others having a part in the program were Paul E. Boslaugh, Hastings, Harvey W. Hess and Fred Komarek of Hebron, Wm. Sloane, Geneva, J.W. Boyd and Mrs. Lulu Wright, Superior, H.A. Brubaker, Anne K. Newhouse, and B.L. Stahl of Nelson. Altogether this was a most impressive service and a very fine tribute in a highly honored gentlement (sic) and Christian citizen.
