Authorities Investigating Case Have No Clue As To The Identity Of Murderer Tom W. Hysler, Sr., 49, former deputy sheriff under W. H. Dowling and well known in the Whitehouse and Baldwin sections of Duval County, was shot and instantly killed by an unknown assassin at the Inglis & Lytle road construction camp near Baldwin at 12:05 o'clock this morning. Hysler had been employed at the camp as a night watchman the past three weeks and was killed as he lay upon a cot in the commissary by a charge of buck shot, fired from a shot gun. The right side of his face was entirely torn away, the assassin escaping from the building immediately after the fatal shot. The muzzle of the gun was held close to Hysler's head as even the wadding from the shell was imbedded in the gruesome wound in his face. Lapirre Heard Shot Joe Lapirre, 20, another night watchman who was in the commissary with Hysler, but at the far end of the building, and separated from Hysler by a partition heard the shot, and turning quickly heard someone running down the steps of the building which is elevated six or seven feet above the ground. Lapierre _________ when he reached Hysler on the cot, a few feet from an open doorway, the murdered had disappeared in the darkness. Hysler was probably killed instantly, as he never uttered a sound after the shot was fired. Lapirre stated Hysler, who came to the commissary a few minutes before the shooting, stated he was ill, and lay down upon the cot. Lapirre then walked to the other end of the building and had been standing at the door there only a few moments when he heard the discharge of the gun and immediately after running fast down the stairs. Probably Not Asleep Lapirre stated that Hysler was probably awake when the murderer entered the building as he had not been on the cot long enough to fall asleep. Immediately after the shooting was reported to the sheriff's office in Jacksonville, Chief Deputy _________ Edwards, accompanied by County Detective Henry Lillenthal, and Deputies A. J. Brigance, L. M. Diay, O. K. Robinson, and N. M. Ulach rushed to the scene to investigate the murder. Long distance telephone advices from Baldwin at an early hour this morning were to the effect that so far they had been unable to pick up a single clue as to the identity of the murderer. The opinion was expressed, however, in Baldwin that Hysler, who had rather a stormy career in that section of the county, was probably killed by an enemy of long standing. Hysler had figured in more than one shooting affray. Hysler Well-Known The Hysler family is well-known, particularly in the western part of Duval County - and its members have always been regarded as stormy petrels. Besides his wife, Tom Hysler is survived by several children, including Tom W. Hysler, Jr., who a number of months ago was tried on the charge of killing a young man named Harvey in Whitehouse. Young Hysler was convicted in the Circuit Court and then sentenced to a term of years in prison, but appealed his case, which is pending. He is also survived by three brothers, Daniel, John and James Hysler, besides a large number of other relatives. Later Advices Later advices from Baldwin state the deputies had scoured the woods over a wide territory around Baldwin in the hopes of picking up the assassin, but without result. The body of the dead man was brought to Jacksonville early today by the Marcus Conant company to be prepared for burial. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
