He was the son of Thomas and Katie Rose (Belden) Soden. He was six foot one quarters inches tall and had a light complexion. MILITARY RECORD: Enlisted September 22, 1894 at Vancouver, Washington. Served in Company "A", 14th Regiment U. S. Infantry. Discharged with rank of Private on September 19, 1899 at Manilla, Philippines. His pension was awarded on Certificate No. C-2 565 196. He was married four times. His first marriage on 25 August 1900 at Woodland, Washington, to Maria Christina Anderson, ended in the death of his Maria on April 26, 1913. His second wife, Anna Towner, whom he married June 11, 1915 at Stevenson, Washington, died December 22, 1918. His third marriage to Olive T. Todd on April 24, 1935 in Vancouver, Washington probably ended in divorce. He married Abbie Whitman O'Neill New Year's Day, 1945 in Kitsap County, Washington. He died June 29, 1964 at the Veterans Home Hospital. His son was William P. Soden of Coquille, Oregon and his daughter was Mrs. Ira R. Varney. Undated obituary placed in his veteran's file: T. W. Soden, 90, Dies At Retsil -- Thomas W. Soden, 90, a veteran of the Spanish-American War, died this morning at the Washington Veterans Home in Retsil. Mr. Soden had lived at the home since 1942. He was born Aug. 6, 1873, in Stoughten, Wis. Prior to moving to this area, he had lived in Kansas, Portland and Clark and Cowlitz counties. He worded as a logger in the Coos Bay, Ore., area from 1921 to 1942. He enlisted in the army in 1894 and served for five years. Mr. Soden was a member of the Retsil Community Church, a member and Past Commander of the United Spanish War Veterans, McKinley Camp No. 33 and a member and Past Noble Grand of IOOF Cowlitz Lodge No. 66. Mr. Soden was married to Abigail O'Neill of Retsil in 1945 and she preceded him in death on Jan. 10 of this year. Surviving are a son, William Paul Soden, Coquille, Ore.; a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Varny, Coquille; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Mathes, Retsil; a stepson, Max Davis, Benton City; a granddaughter and a grat-granddaugher. Services are pending at the Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home, Port Orchard.
