Grantham, Dawes Pioneer Passes Away After Long Illness Last Friday morning, one of Chadron's oldest citizens, T.Y. Grantham, passed away at his home after five weeks of confining illness, the last two weeks of which were filled with the most intense suffering. Mr. Grantham came to Northwest Nebraska with the Sweat colony in 1884. He was always a familiar and much beloved figure in this community. For the last several years, Mr. Grantham had been in rather failing health and had resided in this city. He was a most familiar figure on the streets of Chadron and his passing causes an irreparable loss to this community. Thomas Y. Grantham, son of Thomas and Elizabeth R. Grantham, was born at Hillsborough, Montgomery County, Illinois, September 5, 1837 and departed this life at his home in Chadron, Nebraska, Friday morning August 13, 1926. In the autumn of 1854 he moved to Northwest Missouri, where he resided until April 1884, when he came to Northwest Nebraska with the Sweat colony, where he spent two seasons. In February 1906 with his family he moved onto a ranch near Chadron, where they resided until 1912 when they moved to their present home in Chadron. On September 27, 1860 he was united in marriage to Nancy G. Templeton near Alanthus, Missouri. Nine children were born to this union: six boys and three girls. Three of the children preceded their father in death; Loduska Belle who died in infancy, two sons, Peter Cartwright, named for the great pioneer Methodist preacher of the civil war days, who died in the year 1882 at 14 years of age; Dr. Clinton B. Fisk Grantham who died at Stanberrry, Missouri in 1918. Mr. Grantham answered to the call of his country during the civil war, enlisting as a private August 9, 1862 at Marrietta, Missouri, and served in company B, 31st regiment, with which he remained until he was mustered out of service at Albany, Mo., Nov. 30, 1864. For many years, Mr. Grantham was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Under his leadership, the church became known as the Grantham church, near Alanthus, Missouri. He served as a class leader for moree than twenty years. Besides his wife, the companion who so faithfully walked by his side for nearly 66 years, he is survived by six children: T.L Grantham of Obert, Nebr.; T.C. Grantham, F.W. Grantham, and U.W. Grantham and Mrs. J.C. Vogt, all of Chadron. Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Episcopal church in Chadron, Sunday afternon. Aug. 15. The Reverends W.W. Whitman and E.C. Newland conducted the funeral services. The body was accompanied to the cemetery by a military escort from the local post of the American Legion.
