Description	:	Tillie Irene Van Maanen was the first of five children that were born to Gilbert and Cora Van Hall Van Maanen. She was born on December 5, 1920, in Mahaska County near Leighton, Iowa. Tillie lived in a farmhouse close to Leighton and attended Greely Country Grade School, a one-room schoolhouse, through the 8th grade. Read More	Tillie Irene Van Maanen was the first of five children that were born to Gilbert and Cora Van Hall Van Maanen. She was born on December 5, 1920, in Mahaska County near Leighton, Iowa. Tillie lived in a farmhouse close to Leighton and attended Greely Country Grade School, a one-room schoolhouse, through the 8th grade. When Tillie was 16 years of age she did housework for various people and worked at the Rolscreen Company in Pella, Iowa. Being the oldest of her siblings Tillie quit working in 1943 to tend to the needs of her father who was ill with cancer. On December 5, 1945, she was united in marriage with Martin Vos at the Leighton Christian Reformed Church and to this union four children were born: Adrian Glen, Milton Wayne, Corrine Sue and Twila Mae. Martin and Tillie farmed in the Peoria, Iowa area for 32 years. Tillie was actively involved in helping Martin on the farm and always had a large garden and canned much of the produce. Flower gardens were also special to her which she continued to enjoy throughout her life. She was a good seamstress who sewed a lot of clothing for her family. On December 5, 1977, Tillie's birthday and their 32nd wedding anniversary, Martin was clearing snow when his tractor overturned and he was killed. Tillie later moved to Pella and eventually took a job at Fair Haven East where she worked in the dining room. On August 1, 1985, Tillie was married to John Slings. John had been married to Tillie's younger sister, Bertha, who had passed away in 1983. John had three children: Larry, Dale and Marla. Tillie and John enjoyed traveling to visit his children. On March 30, 1995, John went to his eternal home. Following his death Tillie moved to Fair Haven East where she enjoyed spending time with her many friends and playing games with her grandchildren. Tillie lived there until she became ill and suffered a stroke in May of 2003. Tillie subsequently resided at Pella Regional Health Center Jefferson Place and continued to enjoy outings with her family. Tillie passed away there early Wednesday morning, July 16, 2008, a few hours following what would have been Martin Vos' 90th birthday, and attained the age of 87 years, 7 months and 11 days. Tillie is survived by her four children and their spouses and 10 grandchildren and their families: Adrian and Diane (Shawver) Vos of Pella; Milton and Evelyn (Sytherd) Vos of Pella; Corrine and Jerry Verschuure of Pella; and Steve Haverly of Pella. Tillie leaves three step-children: Larry and Sandy Slings and his two children of Hudsonville, Michigan; Dale and Gloria Slings and their three children of Kalamazoo, Michigan; Marla and Gary Rozenboom and their son of Stillman Valley, Illinois. Of her original family Tillie leaves her two youngest brothers and their wives: William and Laurine Van Maanen, Harold and Marie Van Maanen; and a sister-in-law, Mildred (John) Van Maanen all of Pella. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Martin Vos and John Slings; a step-daughter-in-law, Esther (Larry) Slings; her parents, Gilbert and Cora Van Maanen; her sister, Bertha (John) Slings; her brother, John Van Maanen; her sister-in-law, Luella (Harold) Van Maanen; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Tillie liked to crochet and had made an afghan for each of her children and grandchildren. Tillie made profession of her faith as a young lady at the Leighton Christian Reformed Church. She had been an active member of the Peoria Christian Reformed Church and was presently a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella. Tillie attended ladies societies and Bible study groups throughout her lifetime. Memorials in memory of Tillie may be given for the Pella Christian Grade School or the Pella Christian High School.
