The following obituary was generously contributed to Tim's memorial by great-nephew, Joe Schallan: Spencer Advocate (NE); May 1927 The death of Tim Claassen, an early Boyd county settler, came as a shock to the community. His health had been failing for the past several months but death was not expected. He homesteaded the place northeast of Spencer thirty seven years ago. He was well known and respected. Tim Claassen was born June 25, 1865 in Nessmersiel, Hanover, Germany, and died at Spencer, Nebr. on May 13, 1927, at the age of 61 years, 10 months and 18 days. He came to the United States at the age of 18, locating in Hastings, Nebr., and in 1890 came to Boyd county where he took up a homestead. He was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Wagner at Newhall, Iowa, in 1892 and to this union nine children were born, all living at the time of his death but the oldest son Jacob, who passed away in 1919. The funeral was held at the M.E. church Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. E.W. Nye officiating. Surviving are his widow, four sons: Otto, Tim, Jr., Frank and Henry. Four daughters: Luella, Isabelle, Lenora and Mrs. Margaret Seastone. Two brothers: George and Andrew. Three sisters: Mrs. Anna Toedter of Hastings, Mrs. Helen Johnson of Glenvil, Mrs. Elizabeth Wagner of Mission, S.D. Besides a large number of neighbors and friends who regret the loss of a good citizen.
