Bookout is a retired Associate Professor of Interior Design at Georgia State University's School of Art and Design. He was 60 years old. Dr. Bookout move[d] to Atlanta in 1967 to head the newly developed program of Interior design at Georgia State. His education included a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design from the University of Cincinnati (1965), a Master of Fine Arts in painting from the Cincinnati Academy of Art (1967) and a Ph.D. in Art Education and Constructive Design from Florida State University (1987). Bookout's talent in perspective drawing and painting made him a much sought after renderer/illustrator for interior design and architectural projects. His skills were utilized by such firms as Associate Space Design Continuum, Inc, Designers II, Hirsch Bedner, and Jova-Daniels-Busby. Tim Bookout was a life-long collector of American Decorative Arts with an extensive collection of Basketry from the Southeastern and South Central U.S. He assembled many fine examples of folk pottery, nineteenth century glassware, coin silver, early textiles and Georgia furniture. After his collection of western Shaker furniture and artifacts was exhibitedat the High Museum of Art in 1975, it has been on loan to the South Union Shaker Museum in Auburn, KY; (near Bowling Green). In 2000 the Art Institute of Atlanta purchased the bulk of Bookout's collection of interior Design books and periodicals. In the process, the Bookout Collection is to serve as the repository of documents about the Interior Design profession in general and practice of Interior Design in Atlanta in particular, currently known as the Atlanta Heritage Project. It was the hope of Dr. Bookoout that his collection of Interior Design documents would become a research resource for those primarily interested in environmental studies in the 20th century. Always ready to make a new friend, Bookout loved to talk. As his students can attest to, he was appreciated for his well-honed wit used to spice his lectures. Bookout received the Education Award from the Georgia Chapter of ASID in 1992. He was named the University of Cincinnati Outstanding Alumni of 1995 and was a recipient of the George Sparks Award from Georgia State University. Among his friends were counted the many hundreds of former interior design students from his 33 year teaching career. Most of these former students continue to work in the interior Design profession in the Atlanta area. Always wanting to prepare students for their professional challenges, Bookout often said he was "guilty" of telling truth about Interior Design. A native of Indiana, Dr. Bookout is survived by his mother, Madonna (Freeman) Bookout of Hagerstown, Indiana and one uncle, Deon Bookout of Youngstown, OH; several cousins and other relatives. He is also survived by close friends Jeff Ashworth, Carlos Alvarez, both of Atlanta and Andrew Wood of New Orleans. Funeral arrangements are being made by H.M. Patterson & Sons. Family and friends will receive guest[s] at Patterson's Spring Hill on Sunday, October 27, 2002 from 3:00-5:00 PM and 7:00-9:00 PM. A funeral Service will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 435 Peachtree Street, on Monday, October 28, 2002 at 3:00 PM with Rev. Rick Britton officiating, assisting will be Rev. Fred Whitehurst and Rev. Jim McLean. The faculty and Staff of the School of Art and Design, Georgia State University, will serve as Honorary Escort. Bookout will be returned to Hagerstown, IN for burial. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bookout Collection, Art Institute of Atlanta, 6600 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, 100 Embassy Row, Atlanta, GA 30328. Arrangements by H.M.
