Description	:	Tom was the youngest child of David Emery and Jessie (Comstock) Wherry. He was nearly 93 years of age at death. He was a member of a musical family, Tom began to study the cello at the age of five. The five Wherry children had their own orchestra. The daily practice ritual included a mile walk home from the Academy for lunch followed by 15 munutes of ensemble playing before trudging back to schol for afternoon classes. After graduation from Pawnee City High School in 1916, Tom played in the Univ. of NE. Orchestra and completd studies at the Univ. in 1923. Throughout his long life, he continured to share his love for music by playing for many weddings and funerals and numerous church events. Today's postlude is music he and a friend recorded a few years before his death. As a young man, Tom entered the family business, Wherry Brothers. He first came to Tecumseh in 1930, when the family bought the Ford agency there. When, in 1931, the family decided that Tom's generation needed a licensed embalmer. Tom went to Kansas City to study mortuary science and graduated the following April. He then returned to Tecumseh where he made his home for the rest of his life. At the time of his death he was at 59 year licensed funeral director. Tom and Betty Barr were united in marriage at her family's farm home near Liberty, NE., on August 25, 1926. Betty preceded him in death on Dec. 1, 1970. Tom is survived by his six children; Mary and husband Tom York of Kearney, Ne. Arthur and wife Edie of Humboldt, NE. John and wife Bernie of Pawnee City, NE. Ann of Tecumseh; Tom and wife Deb of Tecumseh and jane and husband Jim Koll of Minneapolis, MN. eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy, one sister, Bernice Benz, and three brothers, Arthur, Kenneth and Ronald. Funeral services were held Oct. 4, 1991 at the First United Presbyterian church in Tecumseh, NE. Interment was in the Pawnee City, NE. Cemetery.
