Description	:	Torbjoren (Olson Lillie Rodne) Ostrem was born Oct 3, 1824 in L. Rodne, Imsland, Norway to Ole Marcussen Lillie Rodne and Eil (Sjursdtr). He was baptized Oct 17, 1824. He died Aug 4, 1902 and is buried in Holland Cemetery near Centerville SD. Torbjoren grew to manhood in Imsland, Norway. On July 12, 1852, he married Ingeborg Bjornsdtr of Nedre Haugeland, daughter of Bjorn Ellefsen and Ingeborg Arnbjornsdtr, farmers on Nedre Haugeland in Imsland. To this union, six children were born. Torbjoren grew to manhood in Imsland, Norway. On July 12, 1852, he married Ingeborg Bjornsdtr of Nedre Haugeland, daughter of Bjorn Ellefsen and Ingeborg Arnbjornsdtr, farmers on Nedre Haugeland in Imsland. To this union, six children were born. Ole in 1854, Ingeborg in 1855, Ihlie (Eli) born 1857 and died in 1859, and Bertha born 1858 and died in 1862, Torbjorn (later Thoms T) born May 24, 1860, and Bjorn born July 18, 1863. The family moved to Skjold to a farm called Ostrem, sometime in early 1860. Here Torbjorn (Thomas T), and Bjorn were born. Torbjorn was a hired man or a husman on Ostrem in Skjold. Their name now changes from Rodne to Ostrem. Times were hard and there were little advantages as a husman to provide well for his family. He came to the United States in June of 1866 landing at Port of Detroit, in Michigan perhaps by way of Quebec, Canada. He and his family went to La Salle County, IL. In 1871, Torbjorn and his sons, Ole and Thomas T. and daughter, Ingeborg came to the Dakota Territory. There is no mention of his wife, Ingeborg or his son, Bjorn. Records found in Norway, show Ingeborg died in Ostrem, Skjold, Norway. No records of Bjorn have been located. Sept 25, 1871, Torbjorn made application for citizenship at Vermillion, Clay County, Dakota Territory. He also filed for homestead on the SW quarter of Section 31, Township 96, range 52 in what is now Turner County, Centerville Township. It is believed that Torbjorn was in the area before the first town or Post Office of Centerville was started. Torbjorn married a second time to Bronal Knutson around 1883, a widow of Ariel Knutson Alandal who died in 1876. Land entry papers that were filed for application 3171 state a fee of $13.88 for 155 and 25/100 acres, paid on the Sept 25, 1871 at Vermillion SD. Records on Feb 6, 1878, state Torbjorn made settlement upon the land on Sept 25, 1871, and built a house 13x22. He fenced and plowed 20 acres, dug a well, built a stable and grainery and planted 5 acres of forest trees. Final fees of $3.88 were paid on Feb 6, 1878. Witness were Thomas H. Satter and Ole T. Ostrem. He became a US citizen on March 30, 1875. Witness were Ole Highland and Harmon Peterson. The Immanuel Lutheran church now stands on the site of Torbjorn Ostrem homestead. The farm is owned by James Andal. The homestead site was given by James and his wife to the Immanuel Lutheran church. The church today is a great tribute to all of the pioneers and ancestors that worked hard to make the church what it is today. This is one of the few churches that still stand.
