His parents, Torbjorn Olson Ostrem and his wife, Ingeborg (Bjornsdtr) moved from Imsland, Norway in the spring of 1860. He came to the Centerville area of Dakota Territory from LaSalle County IL in 1872. He along with his brother, Ole and his father, Torbjorn were the first Norwegian settlers in the county.
