Read More	Scandia Journal, June 8, 1944 Traine Samuel Russell, son of James H. and Anna Wheeler Russell, was born March 2, 1882 near Basco, in Hancock Co., Illinois, and departed this life at his home in White Rock Township, Republic County, Kansas, May 27, 1944, after a severe illness of 14 weeks, having reached the age of 62 years, 2 months and 25 days. At the age of eighteen years he came to Kansas locating with his parents on a farm east of Warwick, Kansas; but in 1902 the family returned to Basco, Illinois. On September 2, 1902, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Hoffman, of Courtland, and to this union was born six children; Carl H., Virginia M., Vera, Velma, Grace and Ethel A. The twins Vera and Velma also Grace preceded him in death. After a year spent in Illinois, he and his wife moved to Hardy, Nebraska where he was employed at the Larson's Livery Barn. In the fall of 1906 they moved to the farm in White Rock Township where he resided until the time of his death. It was in the fall of 1908 during a revival held by Rev. Oliver in a tabernacle in Courtland, that Mr. Russell accepted Christ as his personal Saviour, and became a member of the Lincoln Church of the White Rock Community. He joined the I.O.O.F. Lodge in Hardy, Nebraska in 1905, later transferring his membership to the Courtland Lodge where he was an active member. Mr. Russell was very much interested in the welfare and in the political part of his community. He served as trustee and clerk of White Rock Township for a number of years, and as an active member of the Parkhill school board. He was a kind and loving husband and father, and his happiest hours were those spent with his children and grandchildren. He never was too busy but that he could lend a helping hand to his neighbors and he leaves a place in the hearts of his family and friends that can never be filled. Those left to mourn his departure are: his bereaved wife, Elizabeth Russell; the children, Carl and Dorothy of Courtland; Virgie and Gordon Sherffius, of Topeka, and Ethel and Clarence Nelson of Courtland; the grandchildren Chester, Jimmie, Phyllis, and Gene, Beverly, Max, Maxine and Kenny Joe Russell; Betty Lou and Russell Sherffius, and Samuel Clarence Nelson; his sisters, Aza McClean of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas; Hannah Maxwell of Stratton, Nebraska, and Pearl Myler of Hardy, Nebraska; a sister-in-law, Tillie Weir of Courtland, Kansas, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 31, 1944 at the Hampton Funeral Home, at 2:00 with Rev. Hjalmar Larson in charge. Interment was at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
