(By Sterling Correspondent) Mrs. Tena Schmidt passed away at her home in Sterling at 1:00 o'clock Monday morning, March 8, 1948, at the age of 75 years, 5 months, and 13 days. She had been in poor health the past two and a half years, and her death was not unexpected. On November 2, 1947, she sustained a broken hip and spent nine weeks in the hospital. Soon after she returned home, pneumonia set in and her condition gradually became worse in spite of capable and loving care. Mrs. Schmidt was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Meints and was born in Gage county, Nebraska, on September 25, 1872. When she was four days old, she was baptized Rev. F. W. John, and on April 8, 1888, she was confirmed by Rev. J. Burmeister. She was united in marriage to George B. Schmidt at Sterling on March 4, 1892, by Rev. Wolff. This union was blessed with seven children, five sons, and two daughters. The daughters preceded their mother in death. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt lived on farms in Gage and Johnson counties. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in March of 1942. Soon after this, the health of Mr. Schmidt began to fail and he departed from this world on July 11 of that year. Mrs. Schmidt moved to Sterling in the fall of 1944, and lived here until called from this life. She was a splendid wife and mother, and a kind, considerate neighbor and friend. Surviving are her five sons, Albert of Beatrice, Brunke of Greenfield. Ia., William of Cook, and Henry and Raymond of Sterling. There also are 22 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; six brothers, Fred and William Meints of Sterling, Kress Meints of Oskaloosa. Kans., Edward Meints of Vesta, Albert Meints of Sterling, and George Meints of Amoret. Mo.; and five sisters, Mrs. Mary Bohlken of Amoret Mo., Mrs. Anna Duschka of Sterling, Mrs. Alice Bohlken of Sedalia, Mo., Mrs. Fanny Seute of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Margaret Staley of Amoret, Mo. Funeral services were held at St John's American Lutheran church on Wednesday afternoon with Rev. John Voelk in charge. Music was by Mr. and Mrs. Ennes Eilers, Mrs. Harry Giesmann and Alton Berg. Mrs. Herman Schmidt accompanied at the organ. Mrs. Schmidt was laid to rest in the Sterling cemetery, and the pallbearers were Delmar Schmidt, Virgil Schmidt, Loran Wusk, Walter Wusk, Lavem Schmidt and Ralph Wusk.
