He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Gilman High School in 1939. He attended a trade college in Omaha, Nebraska. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the South Pacific during World War II. He married Helen Rinnan on January 4, 1944, near Gilman. They farmed in the Gilman area. He was a member of the Gilman Community United Church of Christ, the Paul Ward American Legion Post, and the Gilman Co-op Elevator Board. He was a past president of the Gilman School Board. Surviving are his wife, Helen; his children, Steven of New Virginia, Dennis of Gilman, Carol Anderson of Gilman, John of Des Moines, Don of Ankeny, Christine Gaunt of Grinnell, Carla Galloway of Tama, and Connie Kellogg of Bondurant; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Robert of Grinnell and Richard of Weaverville, California; and one sister, Darlene Spencer of San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Doris Fisk. Added 21 March 2021
