Jessica Ave., died Saturday, October 9, 2004 at his home with both of his children, Cindy and Jeff, at his side. Services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday Oct. 12, 2004 at George Boom Funeral Home with interment at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Sioux Falls. Visitation begins 1:00 PM Monday at George Boom Funeral Home where the family will greet friends from 7-8:00 PM. Bert E. Flaten, son of Gunerius C. and Olive (Evans) Flaten, was born March 23, 1915 at Hettinger, ND. He moved to a farm near Sherman, SD in 1927. Bert served in the U.S. Army during WW II from July 15, 1941 until his honorable discharge on October 7, 1945. During his tour of duty, Bert was one of the first soldiers to land at Normandy in France. He was also involved in the liberation of the concentration camp at Eben Zee, Austria. Bert was united in marriage with Helen M. Beneke on June 3, 1950 in Sioux Falls. In 1954 the couple moved to their home on Jessica Avenue, which Bert built himself, and remained there the rest of their lives. Helen preceded him in death on May 25, 2004. Bert worked as an independent truck driver for many years. Before retiring he worked for the Minnehaha County Highway Department for eight years. Bert repaired and collected watches and clocks. His vast knowledge of history and his ability to fix anything truly earned him the respect he deserved. He also enjoyed building and flying model airplanes as well as collecting antique guns. Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Cindy Thomas, Sioux Falls; his son, Jeff Flaten and his wife, Carol, Sioux Falls; two granddaughters, Nicky Logandice and Rachel Flaten; two grandson, Paul and Curt Flaten; and one sister, Alpha Haak and her husband, Alvin, Dell Rapids, SD. In addition to his wife, his parents and two brothers, Clarence and Ebon, preceded Bert in death.
