The family will greet friends following the wake service. Donald Peter Fortin, son of Meddie and Lucille (Berry) Fortin, was born Jan. 23, 1923, in Waubay. He grew up there and graduated from Waubay High School in 1941. He entered the U.S. Army and earned the Silver Star and Bronze Star while serving in both the European and Pacific Theatres during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Waubay. He began work with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Webster. A short time later, he moved to Sioux Falls. He married Margaret Anderson in Milbank May 1, 1948. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls. He retired Jan. 1, 1984, after more than 40 years of service with Northwestern Bell. In retirement, he worked part-time assembling bikes, grills and other items for Lewis Drug, mostly at the Southgate location. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. He was a life-member of American Legion Post 15 and John M. Bliss VFW Post 628. He was a member of Moose Lodge 503. He coached Gray-Y basketball, Bantam baseball and women's softball. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife, Margaret; one son, Keith Fortin and his wife Mary of Sioux Falls; one daughter, Becky Wilkes and her husband Kevin of Savage, Minn.; two granddaughters; one stepgrandson; two sisters, Wilda Zarneke of Van Nuys, Calif., and Gladys Bundrock of Roslyn; three sisters-in-law, Eunice Flanagan of Garretson, Bernice Fortin of San Clemente, Calif., and Josephine Fortin of Watertown; one brother-in-law, Gene Anderson and his wife Marlene of Kiel, Wis.; and his special friends, Ruby and Virgil Holman of Webster.
