Description	:	Ulrich was born May 19 1863, Kurzenborg-bern, Switzerland of Christ and Elizabeth Shone Fuchser. The family saved all the money possible in order that they might come to America. At age 19, Ulrich and his family traveled to the United States and landed in New York where they spent the night on benches to save their money. At age 19, Ulrich and his family traveled to the United States and landed in New York where they spent the night on benches to save their money. Shortly, they came northwest and when they arrived in Saunders County NE, they had only $2.00. The Fuchser family settled in Yutan and Ulrich worked daytime, while the evenings he spent attending night school, learning English. Born to Ulrich and Anna were 6 children: Earnest, June 26, 1888-February 24, 1946; Lena Hermansen, October 17 1889-November 14 1918 (influenza); Ida, December 4 1891; William, August 19, 1893-July 26 1956; Emil, May 19 1895; Fred, June 22 1897-January 5 1970. To make a livelihood, which the land did not furnish in those first drought years, Ulrich took up the business of well digging. He put down many of the first wells in this area, including the famous old Indian well between Gordon and Pine Ridge. He recognized early the cattle possibilities of the Sandhills and bought ranch lands when the dry years came and prices were low. At the time of death he still owned the original homestead and many substantial ranches in the area. Preceeding his death, Ulrich converted over half his estate to war bonds to the sum of $287,000. He felt it was his duty to buy bonds and more bonds. The reason he assigned for this and he did so modestly, was that he owed the US everything he had. In 1919, Ulrich and Anna retired from farming and moved to Gordon, where they resided for 11 years. In the summer of 1930, they built a beautiful brick home at 702 Oak, making special trips to Omaha for materials. It was a well planned home with every modern convenience. They loved its pretty scenery where they kept trees and flowers plentiful to remind them of the native Switzerland. Ulrich thought that anyone could do as well as he. Ulrich passed away January 24, 1945; Anna, August 10 1951.
