The following obit was provided courtesy of long-time friend and fellow contributor, Lynn Eason (extracted from the Mount Airy News, 9/8/1950) - Ulysses Grant Belton, 84, former Surry County sheriff, died unexpectedly about 4 pm Wednesday while riding his horse at his home near here. He suffered a heart attack. Following his retirement from public life, Mr. Belton engaged extensively in farming, and for several years operated a fertilizer store here. In his political and official circles he made use of horse and saddle in traveling over the county, and even to his last days it was one of the familiar scenes in the city to see him riding the saddle on his farm horse or mule. Besides his term as Sheriff of Surry County, Mr. Belton also had served 16 years as a deputy sheriff under the late Sheriff Milt Davis. For a number of years he was a United States revenue agent in Surry County. He was born in Surry County, December 23, 1865, son of Frank and Charity Belton. Surviving are the widow, the former Miss Jettie Barker; one son, Archie Belton of Mount Airy; two daughters, Mrs. George Welch and Mrs. Reid Inman, both of Mount Airy; 17 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; and two brothers, Will and Lum Belton of Mount Airy.
