Kuncl, proprietor of what is believed to be the oldest butcher shop in Nebraska, at 1244 South Thirteenth street, died Thursday night at his home after an illness of 10 months. He was 67. Mr. Kuncl had been in business at the South Thirteenth street address continuously since 1887, and had been active until he suffered a heart attack 10 months ago. One leg was amputated last February when gangrene set in. He was the last surviving member of the Omaha Retail Meat Dealers association. His son, James F., who has assisted in managing the store, will continue to operate it. Coming to this country at the age of 14, Kuncl soon became a helper in a butcher shop in the "Bohemian district" on South Thirteenth street. In 1887 he bought a shop of his own. At first his trad was confined to the immediate neighborhood, but later customers began to come from all parts of the city and from surrounding towns, until he had to refuse deliveries except to homes near the store. Mr. Kuncl successfully invested in Omaha property, owning two apartment houses. He was a member of Ak-Sar-Ben for 35 years. For 15 years he was president of the Retail Meat Dealers' association, and its treasurer for 15 years before this. He had lived on South Thirteenth street for more than half a century. He was a member of the Tel Jed Sokol, the Western Bohemian Fraternal organization, and Woodmen of the World. The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday at the Ted Jed Sokol hall. "Surviving besides the son are the widow, Frances, and four daughters, all of Omaha: Mrs. J.C. Kuncl, Mrs. J.G. Foral, Mrs. J.J. Schneider and Mrs. Roman Hruska. Surviving also are a brother, Charles f., and four sisters, Mrs. Kate Semin, Mrs. Frank Brodil, Mrs. Frank Slama, and Mrs. Rosalie Libal, and six grandchildren, all of Omaha. Kuncl, pioneer Omaha meat dealer, was held Sunday afternoon at the Tel Jed Sokol auditorium. More than a thousand persons crowded into the auditorium and hundreds more stood outside. Stanley Serpan, president of the Tel Jed Sokol and of the Z.C.B.J. lodge speaking in Bohemian, traced Kuncl's career as a business man. He said the funeral was held at the Sokol hall so his friends could come and see him where he was familiar to them. Laurance Plank, pastor of the First Unitarian church, paid tribute to Mr. Kuncl's life. Stanley Letovsky's string quartet played. Flowers formed a semicircle behind the casket. Pallbearers were members of the Omaha Retail Meat Dealers association. A police motorcycle escort headed the mile-long procession from the Sokol hall to the Bohemian National cemetery.
