He was married on Oct. 8, 1890, to Agnes Nachazel. The couple farmed in Carroll township. He quit active farming in 1932, but helped his sons when needed and spent hours every day walking the yards and fields for thistles and other weeds. After the death of Agnes, on Nov. 29,1931, he continued to live on the home farm Vincent Herink with granddaughter, Darlene Herink, operated by his son, William, until Feb. 1947. From then he made his home with his only daughter, Frances (Mrs. William Novotny). Besides the daughter, Vincent and Agnes had 8 sons: Ed, married Emma Votrobeck. They were parents of five daughters and two sons - Dorothy, Margaret, Darlene, Mary Lou, Betty Jean, Charles and Donald. Joe married Ella Hanus. They had two sons: Melvin and Milo. Emil married Eleanora Mehulka, and were the parents of Ernest, LaVern and Phyllis. William married Elbie Podhajsky. They had no children. James married Violet Podhajsky. They had two children: Darlene and James Jr. Vincent and Agnes lost three sons in infancy. There were three houses on the farm where Vincent lived. The age of the first is not known but was already used for storage by 1930. There were many pigeons in the upstairs of that house and he and his children would keep them thinned out, to some extent, by catching the squabs, dressing them and baking or frying them and making soup out of older ones. I recall it was a delicious meat. The second house was already "old" in 1930. This was the home of Vincent and Agnes. It was a weathered house with no paint. This home was torn down about 1950. In 1931, when his son William was married, a new home was built for William and his wife across the driveway east of Vincent's modest home. For a time, all three homes were on the same yard. Vincent's home was surrounded on the West side by a small grove of Walnut trees. He had a little path worn out from his home through the grove to the North West corner of it where he walked with his hoe to the fields and especially to his youngest son James' home to visit everyday. James and his family lived about one fourth mile West of the home place across the road. Later, when the electric power line (R.E.C.) came through some of the trees closest to the road had to be cut. James had some of these cut into lumber and seasoned. In 1961, high school student James Jr. built 2 desks, a magazine rack, and a small drop leaf table, among other things, from this lumber. Thirty-five years later they are good as new and still in use today. Mr. Herink was a former director of the Farmers Lumber Company in Traer, and was for many years director of the Carroll Township No. 3 rural school. He was an outstanding example of the merits of thrift and hard work. Starting life with small assets, he acquired 890 acres of land which he distributed among his sons. He never stopped working, even at his advanced age. Although Mr. Herink was 87 years of age, he was in good health and death came unexpectedly as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage. by Darlene Soska
