Description	:	Valda Schwede, 101, Minot, formerly of Berthold, died Monday, January 11, 2016 in a Minot nursing home. Valda Ora Hansen was born on September 22, 1914, the daughter of Melvin and Ora (Arnold) Hansen in Hingham, Montana. She was raised and educated in Berthold and graduated from Berthold High School in 1932. Valda was united in marriage to Floyd Schwede on August 28, 1934 at Zion Lutheran Church in Berthold. Read More	Valda Schwede, 101, Minot, formerly of Berthold, died Monday, January 11, 2016 in a Minot nursing home. Valda Ora Hansen was born on September 22, 1914, the daughter of Melvin and Ora (Arnold) Hansen in Hingham, Montana. She was raised and educated in Berthold and graduated from Berthold High School in 1932. Valda was united in marriage to Floyd Schwede on August 28, 1934 at Zion Lutheran Church in Berthold. They farmed a few years on the Schwede family farm west of Hartland, where their son Melvin was born, before moving to Oregon for a few years. Upon returning to North Dakota, they purchased a farm west of Berthold. A son, Gerald, blessed the family, followed by a daughter, Judith, a few years later. They farmed until moving into Berthold in 1979. Floyd died on April 23, 1993. Valda continued to live in Berthold until moving into Brentmoor Assisted Living Community in Minot. She was a resident at ManorCare Health Services and Edgewood Vista before moving to Trinity Homes. Valda enjoyed going to visit family and friends. Floyd would come into the house and say, “Pack the suitcase, we are leaving in two hours.” and she was always ready to go. Sometimes it was a surprise where they were going. She enjoyed baking, cooking, gardening and flowers. She always liked her programs on TV and reading. She was always ready to go on picnics with family and friends. One of her highlights of travel was Hawaii with her sister-in-law. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards at the senior citizens and the nursing homes. She was called the “Bingo Queen” many times. Valda always enjoyed time with family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and friends. She embroidered pictures, pillowcases and dish towels for her family and grandchildren, and baby quilts for the great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She embroidered over 800 sets of dish towels and many were given away as gifts. She loved to embroider up into her 90s. Valda was a friend to all wherever she went. All those left behind will miss her warm smile and her friendly greetings. Valda was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, ZLCW of Berthold, taught Sunday school in her earlier years and was active in the Berthold community. Valda’s faith was the strength of her life. She enjoyed her years in the nursing home and taking part in all of the activities there. Making it to 100 years old was her goal, and she surpassed that. Valda is survived by her daughter, Judith Deaver, Minot; daughter-in-law, Margaret Schwede, Spokane, WA; grandchildren, Kelly Deaver, Berthold, Kimberly (Steve) Lindemann, Brookings, SD, Steve (Rondi) Deaver, Minot, Brian (Cristine) Deaver, Valley City, Shelley (Ben) Gilbert, Spokane, WA, Carie (Richard) Weeks, Spokane, WA and Jennifer Paull, Coeur’dAlene, ID; great-grandchildren, Shelbey, Rebecca, Breanna, Carson, Cole, Catherine, and Aaron Deaver, Tresa and Devin Torgerson, Richard (RJ) and Aliana Weeks, and Keera and Kali Paull; great-great-granddaughter, Daisy Fulks; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends. Valda was preceded in death by her parents, husband Floyd, sons, Melvin and Gerald, grandson Randy Deaver, son-in-law Gary Deaver, brother John Hansen, sister Daisy Buen, sister-in-law Evelyn Hanson and brother-in-law Kenneth Buen.
