Read More	Highland Recorder August 28, 1914 HIGHLANDER KILLED IN WEST August 21st, Highland Recorder For the benefit of those who learn of the sad death of Van Armstrong I will give you the circumstances under which he lost his life. As near as we could learn the details, on Wednesday morning, the 19th he complained of not feeling well and told his Uncle Van, for whom he worked, that he would rest that day and some time in the forenoon got on his bicycle and went to Lexington. From there he went presumably to Chenoa and on his return, a heavy rain came up and the condition of the road became such that he could not ride the wheel further, and there being a freight train taking water at Balard, he put his wheel in an open box car and climbed in to ride back to Lexington, which he did. A passenger train being due at that time going north, the freight being south bound, did not stop at the station but proceeded on through to take the siding which is about a mile, and he not being acquainted with conditions, thought the train was not going to stop, and in attempting to get off was thrown against the rails and ties of the west track where he was found a few minutes after by the train crew, dead. No one knows just how it happened or where he had been. He being a nephew of mine I made an effort to find out the particulars as far as possible. The jury's verdict was "accidental death on railroad." Geo. E. Wooddell Highland Recorder August 28, 1914 The body of Van Armstrong passed through McDowell last Saturday for burial at McKendree. He was accidentally killed near Lexington, ILL. by a freight train.
