In Memory of Velda Simpson Carr. . ..."Velda Gertrude Carr, 85, daughter of Fred and Effie P. Fees Simpson, was born near Mt. Etna October 18, 1905, and died July 3, 1991, at the farm home near Corning, [Adams County], Iowa. . She was educated in the Adams County Schools. In 1924, she married Henry Franklin Carr who preceded her in death November 14, 1978. They were the parents of two daughters and later adopted their grandson, Larry Martin Rivera. They lived on farms near Carl and Mt. Etna until buying a farm in Douglas Township, west of Corning. They lived there until his death. . She was an active member of the Corning Methodist Church and the Rose Ann Hospital Auxiliary. She also worked as a cook for the Corning Community Schools and later at Colonial Manor Nursing Home. . In 1977, she went to California to help care for her mother until her death. When she returned to Corning, she lived at Westgate housing. . She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Don and Frank Simpson; one sister, Elpha Givens; and a grandson, Richard Mercer, who died in infancy. . She is survived by two daughters, Ruth Smitherman of Omaha, Nebraska, and Maxine Mercer and her husband Carrol of Corning; a son Larry and his wife Joan of Corning; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Byron and his wife Bonna and Richard Simpson, all of Carmel Valley, Calif.; and one sister, Helen and her husband Clark Carmichael of Corning. . Services were held July 5 at the United Methodist Church in Corning with Rev. Don Strickler officiating. Casket bearers were Larry Carmichael, Marc Carr, Denny Mercer, Doug Mercer, Randy Woosley, Frank Woosley, Larry Carr, and Janice K. Spring. . Burial was in the Mt.
