Velda W. Potter was born on August 30, 1917 in Baldwin, Iowa, to Henry and Mary (Evers) Durkop. She was educated at the Red School and South Fork #3 west of Maquoketa. She married George V. Potter on August 21, 1937 in Maquoketa, Iowa. He preceded her in death on June 16, 2001. Velda was a homemaker and farmed with her husband west of Maquoketa for 33 years prior to moving to Maquoketa. She then worked for the Coast to Coast store in Maquoketa as a clerk, Jackson County Public Hospital in the housekeeping department, and lastly for the Maquoketa schools as a bus driver. Velda was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, the Roadrunners Camping Club, and the Baldwin Saddle Club, where she had served as treasurer. Velda enjoyed doing volunteer work, camping, card clubs and embroidering. Velda is survived by a son, Wayne (Judy) Potter of Wyoming, IA; 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 18 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Edna Hans of Davenport, IA; and a brother-in-law, Stewart Edwards of Gallatin, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, one in infancy and Ronald Potter on May 4, 2002, and 3 sisters, Florence, Beulah and Arvena.
