Velma, the daughter of Lewis and Gerturde (Woten) Gilliland, was born June 27, 1907 in Montgomery County, Iowa. She graduated from Red Oak High School in 1927. Velma and Homer Edward Connell, Sr. were united in marriage on July 13, 1929, in Sidney, Iowa. Velma, the daughter of Lewis and Gerturde (Woten) Gilliland, was born June 27, 1907 in Montgomery County, Iowa. She graduated from Red Oak High School in 1927. Velma and Homer Edward Connell, Sr. were united in marriage on July 13, 1929, in Sidney, Iowa. She and Homer operated a restaurant in Blair, Nebraska, for one year after their marriage, then moved to Emerson, Iowa in 1930. Homer operated a blacksmith and welding shop in Emerson until his death in 1977, at which time Velma moved to Red Oak. Velmas was preceded in death by her husband; infant daughter, Joyce Elaine; parents, brothers; Mauice and Francis; sisters, Bernice Brown and Gladys Pace. She is survived by her son; Edward Connell and his wife, Mildred of Red Oak, Iowa; three grandchildren, Steve Connell and Carmen Link, both of Red Oak, and Susan Brown of Henderson, Iowa; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Harold Gilliland of Long Beach, California and Ralph Gilliland of Downy, California and two sisters, Grace Templeton of Red Oak and Ruby Olstad of Boulder City, Nevada. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 5, 1995, at Nelson-Boylan Funeral Chapel with burial in the Emerson, Iowa, Cemetery. There was open visitation at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Church of Nazarene. Nelson-Boylan Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Malvern Leader, November 9, 1995, page 2
