She was born on January 17, 1918, in What Cheer, Iowa, the daughter of Edgar and Edith Estella Kent Timmons. On January 20, 1935, Velma was united in marriage to Dwight W. Calef at University Park, Iowa. Early in her adult life she worked at the Supply Store in Oskaloosa. From 1942 to 1946 she worked seasonally for McCurdy Seed in Fremont, Iowa, sorting corn during the harvest. In the early 1950s, Velma joined Dwight in the family business, Calef Moving Company, and her specialty was packing household breakables. In 1977, they sold the family business and enjoyed retirement together. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Oskaloosa. She enjoyed arts and crafts, and working at the moving company with her family. Her family includes her husband of over 70 years, Dwight Calef of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Tamie Jean Calef of Des Moines, Iowa; a grand dog, Honey Bear; two brothers and their wives, Gerald and Fern Timmons of Augusta, Kansas, and Dale and Wanda Timmons of Crestview, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. Velma was preceded in death by her parents and 3 brothers, Laythle Timmons, LeVerne Timmons, and Keith Timmons. Funeral services for Velma Calef will be held Monday, October 17, 2005, at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, with the Reverends David Childers and Ralph Sprunk officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Sunday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel, and the family will be at the funeral home from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday to greet friends and relatives.
