Read More	The Goodland Daily News Tues July 2 2002 Velva Follett Velva Follett, 90, a former Goodland and Ruleton teacher, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Village in St. Francis. She was born July 16, 1911, in Cheyenne County, one of 11 children to Lorenzo and Jessie (Jacobs) Halley. She attended the Pleasant Ridge District 31 country school. She graduated from St. Francis High School. She taught school at Lawn Ridge District 12 and drove her younger sisters to dances in the Cheyenne Valley area where Vic Follett was playing his banjo. One Saturday night in June 1933, while they danced, Vic asked her for a date the following Saturday. In September 1933, she started teaching the Sunny Slope School, District 47, in the southwest corner of Cheyenne County. She and Vic married on Jan. 13, 1934, in Deerfield by a Methodist minister, and the couple kept their marriage a secret because at that time a teacher as not to marry while teaching. Wages for teachers went to half of what they were in 1930 when she started teaching, so she did not ask for another contract at the end of the year. The couple built a basement home in Wheeler in 1934 and had their first child in 1935. Vic went to work for the Laramie-North Park and Western Railroad in 1937. The family moved in 1940 to Derby, Colo., where Vic worked as an airplane and engine mechanic for Ray Wilson, now recognized as one of the Colorado flying history pioneers. The family moved to Laramie, Wyo., in 1942, where Vic taught Navy pilots to fly. When the flight school shut down in 1944, the family movedto Aurora, Colo. In 1946, the family moved to Goodland. He worked for Goodland Flying Service, and she got her teacher's certificate and started teaching in Ruleton in 1947. She taught primary grades there for 22 years. When the schools consolidated, she taught third grade at North Elementary School for five more years. She attended summer school in Pocatello, Idaho, with her older sister Bernice and earned her bachelor's degree in education. She retired from teaching in the spring of 1974. She enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Garden Club, Christian Women's Fellowship, the Order of the Eastern Star and several teaching organizations. She moved in with her daughter Virginia in 1993 and with her oldest daughter Fae and her husband Darl in 1996. As her health declined, she moved to the Good Samaritan Village in St. Francis in 1999. Her husband preceded her in death in 1989. Survivors include three daughters, Fae (Darl) Elder of Aurora, Colo., Annette Franklin of Manhattan andVirginia Wheeler of Westminster,Colo.; three sisters, Opal Winston of Salt Lake City and Jessie Schield and Bessie (Albert) Burr of St. Francis; eight grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Services were held Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Knodel Funeral Home in St. Francis. Burial was in the Cheyenne Valley Cemetery in Wheeler. Memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Village in care of the funeral home at 202 S. Benton, St. Francis, Kan. 67756.
