Mrs. Samber was welcomed into this life on April 1, 1923, northeast of London in the small town of Old Buckenham, Norfolk, England, the youngest daughter of Harry and Edith (Foster) Bray. She was raised by parents of very modest means in a family of three boys and three girls. She grew to become an adventurous spirit. She supported the war effort in WWII England by working in a factory that manufactured ammunition and military supplies. She often spoke of the sounds of air raid sirens and bombs falling from the sky, and of riding her bicycle through the “village green” at night with the headlamp turned off so the enemy planes flying overhead would be unable to see and target her. She met a handsome “Yank” named George Samber, who was an American stationed at Snetterton Heath air base with the 8th Army Air Corps. The two spent countless nights dancing to the big band sounds playing on the air base. They married on April 2, 1945 in Thetford, England. When the war ended, Mrs. Samber packed a few of her favorite belongings, mostly cookbooks, muffin pans, and fine linens, and boarded the Queen Mary for the long voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to begin her next adventure as a naturalized U.S. citizen. She proudly recounted seeing the Statue of Liberty upon the ship’s arrival in New York City. She and George settled and farmed near Stoneham, Colorado, and these were among her best days. She loved days spent raising chickens, eggs, dairy cattle and wheat, and dancing at the Stoneham pool hall on Saturday nights. She and George later moved to Sterling where she was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church for over fifty years, the American Legion Auxiliary, and a regular participant in a card game called “scat” with her many friends. She was a loving homemaker, a proud Brit, and an even prouder American. Her cute sense of humor will be sorely missed. Mrs. Samber was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Harry, Willie and John; sisters Winnie and Gertrude; husband George; and numerous in-laws, friends, and extended family. Mrs. Samber is survived by two sons; one daughter; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws; her beloved canine companion, Scooby; and her personal caregivers.
